Sometimes, under veterinary guidance. Psyllium—the bulk-forming fiber associated with Metamucil—is one dietary option veterinarians may consider for some constipated cats. That does not mean every Metamucil product is suitable, or that a human product can be given safely at a standard dose. A cat’s hydration, symptoms, medical history, and the exact product all matter.

Can I give my cat Metamucil?

Do not give your cat Metamucil without first asking the cat’s veterinarian to approve the exact product and plan. Veterinary guidance concerns psyllium or psyllium-containing diets, not every product sold under the Metamucil brand. Human formulations can differ in flavorings and other ingredients, so check the complete label rather than relying on the brand name.

Veterinary references describe psyllium as a possible dietary tool for certain constipated cats. It absorbs water, increases stool bulk, and can help soften feces and support colonic movement. Whether that is appropriate depends on why the cat is constipated and how severe the problem is. Some cats may need a different diet or clinical treatment instead.

VCA discusses a veterinary psyllium capsule product, Vetasyl, for cats and dogs; that is not an endorsement of any particular product for an individual cat. Your veterinarian can advise whether psyllium is appropriate and, if so, which formulation to use.

When psyllium may not be safe

Psyllium absorbs water and adds bulk, so it is not a suitable unsupervised trial in every situation. VCA advises against using it in pets suspected of or at risk of intestinal blockage, or pets that have difficulty swallowing. A veterinarian should assess persistent straining, little or no stool, or a cat that seems unwell rather than having an owner try to manage it with fiber.

Hydration is important. Merck Veterinary Manual advises that animals be well hydrated before fiber supplementation to reduce the risk of fiber becoming impacted in the colon. VCA also advises ample access to fresh water. Do not start a fiber supplement for a dehydrated cat without veterinary direction.

Formulation matters too. Royal Canin Academy prefers unflavored psyllium products for cats and says products containing xylitol are contraindicated. VCA warns that psyllium mixed with thickened food or liquid may create a choking risk. Have the veterinarian review the product’s full ingredient list and the way it would be given.

How much psyllium should I give my cat?

There is no universal Metamucil dose for cats. Published veterinary references give different amounts in different contexts, and neither is a product-specific prescription for your cat:

  • Vet-founded & Formulated: Co-founder and veterinarian Dr. Dulake creates formulas for pet parents focused on treating the root cause, not just the symptom; at Fera Pets, we combine Eastern and Western philosophies to deliver long-term wellness for your pets.
Source Amount described How to interpret it
Merck Veterinary Manual 1–4 teaspoons per meal, depending on animal size; it notes that cats and small dogs need lower amounts. A broad reference range, not a dosing instruction for a particular cat or Metamucil formulation.
Royal Canin Academy Approximately 1–2 teaspoons per meal for unflavored psyllium. A different context and recommendation; it should not be treated as interchangeable with Merck’s range.

Ask the veterinarian to specify the product, amount, frequency, and duration. Do not calculate a dose by adapting a human serving size or combine products without approval.

What the evidence says about psyllium for cats

The evidence supports psyllium as one possible dietary approach, not as a proven treatment for every constipated cat or every Metamucil product. Merck discusses bulk-forming fiber, including psyllium, as an option and notes that many constipated cats respond to dietary supplementation. Other approaches may include a fiber-enriched veterinary diet, or—in selected cases—a highly digestible, low-residue strategy. More fiber is not automatically better: fiber type and intestinal motility matter, and increasing stool bulk may be a concern when motility is severely reduced.

  • VET-FORMULATED, TRUSTED BY 125,000 VETS: Glandex is a leading anal gland supplement for cats, recommended by over 125,000 veterinarians.* Pair with Glandex Anal Gland Hygienic Wipes for outside cleanup. Made in the USA, from vet-founded Vetnique.

A 2024 feeding study by Keller and colleagues included nine healthy neutered adult cats. During the short study, cats eating a diet containing 6% psyllium had more bowel movements and higher fecal score, wet weight, and moisture measures than cats eating a diet containing 6% cellulose. The study was small, involved healthy cats rather than cats being treated for constipation, and tested a diet—not Metamucil powder. The authors included employees of Royal Canin SAS, a division of Mars Petcare.

A 2022 review in Today’s Veterinary Practice reported that a psyllium-containing diet completely resolved clinical signs in 82% to 93% of cats in one study. That diet also contained chicory pulp and other additives, so the result cannot be attributed to psyllium alone. Neither finding is a general success rate for Metamucil or for all constipated cats.

What to discuss with your veterinarian

Before giving any supplement, tell the veterinarian what you have observed and bring the exact package or a clear image of its full ingredient label. Useful points to cover include:

  • How long the constipation or straining has been happening, and whether it has recurred.
  • Whether the cat may be dehydrated, has trouble swallowing, or could have an intestinal blockage.
  • Whether a fiber supplement, a fiber-enriched diet, or a different dietary strategy best fits the suspected cause and gut motility.
  • The exact psyllium product and ingredients, along with the veterinarian’s directions for amount, frequency, duration, and follow-up.
  • What change in stool or symptoms should prompt a call or a recheck.

Do not change an existing constipation treatment plan on your own. VCA advises consulting the veterinarian before changing a cat’s treatment protocol.

When constipation needs veterinary treatment

Moderate to severe or recurrent constipation, and obstipation (severe constipation with impacted stool), may require treatment beyond dietary fiber. Depending on the cat’s condition, veterinary care may include fluids, medication, an enema, or manual removal of feces. Laxatives should be avoided in dehydrated animals because they can worsen dehydration.

Contact a veterinarian promptly for persistent or severe symptoms, suspected blockage, or a cat that seems unwell. A supplement discussion is not a substitute for assessing those problems.
