Its main appeal is a range of dry formulas with high animal-protein levels and low listed carbohydrate or starch levels; the key trade-off is that dry food does not provide the moisture of wet food. The score is Cats.com’s editorial assessment, not a certification or clinical evaluation.
What Cats.com reviewed and how it scored Young Again
Writer Mallory Crusta says the Cats.com team researched Young Again’s history, manufacturing and sourcing practices, and recalls, then ordered three recipes for at-home evaluation. The review says it considered nutritional content, ingredients, smell, texture, and cat appeal; these are Cats.com’s reported methods, not tests repeated for this article. Read the Cats.com review.

How the formulas differ
The review covers Original 50/22, Zero, Mature Health, and LID Zero Mature. The manufacturer’s current product pages give recipe-specific guaranteed analyses and calorie figures. These numbers should not be carried across the range or treated as independent laboratory results.

Sources for the first two rows are Young Again’s 50/22 product page and Zero product page; Mature Health figures are from its Mature Health product page. Values are the manufacturer’s current listed figures accessed in 2026. Guaranteed-analysis percentages are not directly interchangeable with dry-matter or caloric-weight nutrient comparisons.
Check the bag name and intended life stage
Young Again says its 50/22 and Zero kitten products will be renamed TruCarnivore Classic Kitten and TruCarnivore Zero Kitten in 2026. Product naming is therefore in transition. Confirm the label, current formula, and life-stage statement on the product you are considering rather than assuming that an older review name or a current search result describes the same bag.
Rank #2
- The first extruded dry diet/kibble pet food that is Starch Free (Epigen does what "Grain Free" dog food and cat foods only pretend to do)
- More closely resembles the food your pet is designed to eat. Has the natural flavor and taste that pets truly desire
- Is replete with all the critical food elements Wysong was first to put into pet foods – probiotics, prebiotics, enzymes, phytonutrients, nutraceuticals, natural form antioxidants, vitamins and minerals
- Contains unprecedented and unequalled meat content, including organic. Rich in omega-3's and other essential fatty acids
- Very nutrient dense. Introduce slowly according to the feeding guidelines. Can be used as a protein booster and meal supplement
What the review’s low-carbohydrate angle does—and does not—show
Cats.com’s central positive is that the reviewed formulas emphasize animal protein and low carbohydrate or starch levels. Young Again’s product pages list the specific recipe values above, but those figures do not establish that a food prevents or treats a disease, nor do they demonstrate a particular health outcome. The accessible sources provide no population-level outcome statistic for cats eating Young Again.
The label pages describe 50/22 and Zero as meeting AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages. That is distinct from saying a food was approved by AAFCO or passed a feeding trial. Young Again’s own explainer says, “What AAFCO does not do is approve any pet food on the market”; this is the manufacturer’s wording, not a quotation newly verified against AAFCO material. If your cat has a diagnosis such as diabetes or kidney disease, ask your veterinarian to assess the cat’s complete diet and individual needs. A low-carbohydrate or reduced-mineral description alone is not a treatment recommendation.
The practical trade-off: dry food and hydration
Cats.com flags moisture as the main limitation of Young Again’s dry-food format, writing, “All dry food is deficient in water.” That is the review’s phrasing, not a clinical quotation. If moisture intake is a concern for your cat, discuss the overall feeding plan with a veterinarian; the review does not establish a specific clinical effect for this brand’s recipes.

Calorie density and feeding amounts
The listed formulas provide 647 to 675 kcal per cup, depending on recipe. Because calorie density differs among foods, a cup-for-cup swap with another kibble may change a cat’s calorie intake. Young Again offers both free-choice and measured feeding approaches and recommends a gradual transition. Its measured-feeding examples are:
| Cat’s weight | Manufacturer’s example daily amount |
|---|---|
| 8 lb | 36 g/day |
| 10 lb | 45 g/day |
| 12 lb | 54 g/day |
These are manufacturer instructions, not individualized prescriptions. Follow the current feeding guidance for the exact recipe and adjust for your cat’s body condition, activity, and needs; seek veterinary input when needed. See the manufacturer’s feeding instructions.

Availability and how to compare alternatives
Cats.com reports that Young Again sells directly through its own website. Its reviewed product should not be presented as an Amazon purchase. Dr. Elsey’s is named in the review as a relevant low-carbohydrate dry-food competitor, but a useful comparison requires specific, current products rather than brand-level claims.
- Match life stage and intended use before comparing formulas.
- Check whether nutrient figures are guaranteed analysis, dry-matter values, or values on another basis.
- Compare calories per serving, ingredient lists, and moisture format alongside protein and carbohydrate figures.
- Verify the current product name, label, and purchase channel; Young Again’s kitten naming is changing in 2026.
How to read the recall score
Cats.com assigned recall history a score of 7/10 in its 2026 evaluation. The available review details also mention a February 2026 voluntary recall of Young Again’s Core Health dog food by the parent company. That is a dog-food event, not evidence of a cat-food recall, and the score should not be read as a claim that a specific cat recipe was recalled. For a current decision, check official recall notices and distinguish the product and species involved.
Who may want to consider Young Again
The review’s findings make Young Again most relevant to readers looking for a dry food with high listed protein and low listed carbohydrate or starch levels, and who are comfortable buying directly from the manufacturer. The choice is less straightforward for someone prioritizing moisture, comparing formulas without checking calories, or choosing food for a cat with a diagnosed condition without veterinary guidance. The Cats.com scorecard is one editorial evaluation; it does not replace checking the exact formula or your cat’s individual nutritional needs.
