Clavamox is a prescription antibiotic combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium. The U.S. label lists a cat dose of 62.5 mg twice daily, but that figure is not a dosing instruction for an individual cat: follow the prescription and contact the prescribing veterinarian before changing or stopping treatment. Clavamox is for use by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian.

What is Clavamox used for in cats?

Clavamox is an oral antibacterial medicine. Amoxicillin provides antibacterial activity; clavulanate inhibits certain beta-lactamase enzymes that can inactivate some penicillins. The official U.S. label lists feline skin and soft-tissue infections, including abscesses and cellulitis or dermatitis, as well as urinary tract infections. It is not a general treatment for every illness: a veterinarian must determine whether a bacterial infection is suspected and whether this medicine is appropriate.

Zoetis’ chewable prescribing information cautions: “Prescribing antibacterial drugs in the absence of a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection is unlikely to provide benefit to treated animals and may increase the risk of the development of drug-resistant animal pathogens.” Official Clavamox chewable label.

What is the Clavamox dosage for cats?

The official U.S. Clavamox labels state a feline dose of 62.5 mg twice daily. For the oral drops, the label equates 62.5 mg with 1 mL. These are labeled dosing figures, not a recommendation to start the drug, calculate a dose, or adjust a prescription yourself. Use the exact product and amount prescribed for your cat; ask the prescribing veterinarian or dispensing pharmacy if the label, formulation, or directions are unclear.

Clavamox is available as oral drops and chewable tablets. The appropriate form depends on the prescription and what can be administered to that cat; the sources do not establish that one form is clinically better or easier for every cat. For liquid medicine, a clearly marked oral measuring syringe can help measure the prescribed amount, but verify the dose and technique with the veterinary team.

How long should a cat take Clavamox?

The labeled duration varies by the infection being treated. The U.S. label gives these directions:

Feline indication Label duration Important direction
Skin and soft-tissue infections, including abscesses and cellulitis/dermatitis 5–7 days or 48 hours after symptoms subside; do not exceed 30 days If there is no response after 3 days, the label says to discontinue therapy and reevaluate the case. Contact the prescribing veterinarian promptly rather than changing treatment on your own.
Urinary tract infections 10–14 days or longer; maximum 30 days The veterinarian determines the appropriate course for the individual case.

These durations come from the official U.S. prescribing information; your veterinarian’s instructions for your cat take precedence. Do not stop early, extend treatment, or restart leftover medicine without veterinary direction.

What are Clavamox side effects in cats?

Post-approval adverse-event reports for dogs and cats list anorexia (loss of appetite), lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea, in that reporting order. The label says not all events are reported and that frequency and causal relationship cannot reliably be estimated from those reports. It gives no reliable incidence percentage, so the list should not be read as a measure of how often these effects occur or proof that Clavamox caused a particular symptom.

Allergic reactions

Clavamox contains amoxicillin, a semisynthetic penicillin, and can cause an allergic reaction. The labels contraindicate its use in animals with a history of allergic reaction to penicillins or cephalosporins. If you suspect an allergic reaction, contact a veterinarian urgently. The label’s emergency-treatment language is for veterinary care, not a home-treatment protocol.

Pregnancy and breeding

The labels say safety in pregnant or breeding animals has not been determined. If your cat is pregnant or intended for breeding, raise that with the veterinarian before treatment; the label’s statement is an uncertainty, not evidence of a known harm.

What should I do if my cat is not improving?

Contact the prescribing veterinarian promptly if your cat is not improving, is getting worse, or develops concerning symptoms. For the labeled feline skin and soft-tissue use, the label specifically calls for stopping therapy and reevaluating the case if there is no response after 3 days. The veterinarian can assess the diagnosis and next steps; do not independently alter the dose or course. Seek urgent veterinary advice if you suspect an allergic reaction.
