Melatonin is sometimes used off label in cats for sleep or behavior concerns and to suppress the heat cycle, but there is no established general dose for cats. Ask your veterinarian whether it is appropriate for your cat and which product and regimen to use; do not calculate a dose from reproductive studies or give a human product without veterinary guidance.

Can cats take melatonin?

Veterinarians may use melatonin off label for certain sleep or behavior concerns and to suppress estrus, or a cat’s heat cycle. Off-label use means the use has not been reviewed or approved for that purpose by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or Health Canada, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Whether it makes sense depends on the cat and the reason for considering it; a veterinarian is the right person to assess that decision.

Melatonin is a hormone supplement, not a reliable contraceptive. Evidence about reproductive effects comes from specific studies and does not establish that it will prevent pregnancy or reliably control an individual cat’s cycles.

What is the melatonin dosage for cats?

There is no universal, well-established melatonin dose for cats with sleep or behavior problems. The available reproductive-study regimens answer different questions and should not be used as household dosing instructions. Ask your veterinarian to specify the product, amount, timing, and duration if treatment is advised.

Why reproductive-study doses are not general dosing advice

A randomized 2011 study of postpubertal queens tested an 18 mg subcutaneous implant or oral melatonin at 4 mg per cat per day until estrus, alongside a control group. These were study protocols for reproductive outcomes, not a recommended dose for sleep or behavior concerns. A 2022 review also describes differing reproductive-study formulations, doses, durations, and light protocols, and notes that no melatonin formulation or product is registered for use in cats: Goericke-Pesch and Packeiser’s review.

What side effects and cautions matter?

VCA lists sleepiness, weight gain, and changes in fertility as potential side effects. It advises against use in pets allergic to melatonin and urges caution for pregnant or nursing animals, breeding animals, young pets that have not reached sexual maturity, and pets with severe liver disease. The importance in animals of some effects reported in people is unknown, so human side-effect lists should not be treated as established feline effects. Contact a veterinarian if your cat has an unusual change after taking it.

Which melatonin products are appropriate for cats?

Oral melatonin comes in capsules, tablets, and liquid. VCA cautions against sustained-release oral melatonin for off-label use in pets. Human products may contain additional ingredients, so have your veterinarian review the exact label rather than assuming a product is suitable based on its melatonin content alone. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that melatonin exposure can cause vomiting, lethargy, sedation, or ataxia, and flags other ingredients of concern in human products, including 5-HTP and xylitol. VCA’s specific xylitol toxicity warning concerns dogs; it should not be read as evidence that xylitol has the same toxicity in cats.

What does the research say about melatonin and a cat’s heat cycle?

In a 2011 randomized study, researchers examined interestrus intervals in 28 postpubertal queens and puberty timing in 32 prepubertal females. Among the postpubertal cats, the reported interestrus interval was 63.8 ± 5.4 days in the implant group, 63.0 ± 5.3 days in the oral-treatment group, and 19.2 ± 1.4 days in controls. These are findings in the study population, not predictions for an individual cat. The authors concluded that long-term melatonin slightly prolonged interestrus but did not postpone puberty (Gimenez et al., 2011).

The study reported no clinically apparent side effects in its study cats, but that result does not establish universal safety. Its findings also do not show that melatonin is a dependable contraceptive or provide a standard regimen for household use.

What should I do if my cat ate melatonin?

Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly. Keep the package or label available and be ready to share the product, ingredients, amount that may have been eaten, and when it happened. Do not induce vomiting or give a home antidote unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional directs you to do so. Pet Poison Helpline and Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine both advise against inducing vomiting without specific direction.
