If you’re thinking about giving up your cat, first ask whether local help could make it possible to keep them. If it can’t, work toward a suitable new home or contact a reputable shelter or rescue. Call before you travel: intake rules, space, and timing vary, and a shelter may not be able to accept your cat right away.

Can I get help so I don’t have to give up my cat?

Sometimes. Financial pressure, a short-term emergency, illness, a lack of affordable veterinary care, or pet-restrictive housing can make keeping a cat difficult. The ASPCA describes safety-net services that may include pet food assistance, veterinary financial aid or subsidized care, temporary animal housing, and spay/neuter services. Programs vary by community, so contact a nearby shelter or rescue and explain what is making care difficult. They may know of local resources or help you consider alternatives.

A call can also help clarify whether the problem is temporary or whether rehoming is the better option. Best Friends Animal Society describes managed-intake conversations as a way to understand the situation and identify resources that might help a family keep its pet or find another home. You can ask for that conversation before making a surrender appointment.

How do I find a new home for my cat?

If your cat cannot stay with you, look for a person or organization able to provide a stable, appropriate home and meet the cat’s known needs. The ASPCA encourages responsible self-rehoming when possible; when the original home is no longer an option, it recommends seeking a suitable guardian or, as a last resort, a licensed, reputable shelter, rescue group, or sanctuary.

You can ask friends, family, or trusted community contacts whether they can offer a good fit, and use responsible self-rehoming resources where available. Be candid with any prospective adopter about the cat’s known medical and behavior history, and discuss whether the person can manage those needs. A thoughtful match matters more than a quick handoff.

To locate organizations, use the ASPCA’s Find a Shelter page, which also points to Petfinder’s shelter list. Contact each organization directly: a directory listing does not mean it has an open surrender place. If one group cannot help, ask whether it can refer you to another organization better suited to your cat or circumstances.

How do I surrender my cat to a shelter?

  1. Find local options. Contact nearby municipal shelters, nonprofit shelters, and rescues. Explain your location and why you need to rehome your cat; ask whether another organization may be a better fit.
  2. Call before going. Ask whether the organization accepts owner surrenders, whether you need an appointment, and how its intake process works. Describe any medical or behavior concerns so staff can advise you appropriately.
  3. Confirm the practical details. Ask about fees, eligibility, required paperwork and records, what to bring, and what happens if intake is full. Ask whether there is a waitlist or another process and what you should do while you wait.
  4. Follow the organization’s instructions. Prepare the requested documents and items, and arrange a safe trip in a secure cat carrier.

Shelter intake is not uniform. Some organizations schedule admissions, manage intake according to capacity, or have a waitlist. The ASPCA’s New York City guidance, for example, notes that a shelter may not always be able to accept an owner surrender immediately. That is an example of local practice, not a rule for every shelter. Check with the actual receiving organization before arriving.

Will the shelter take my cat?

Only the shelter or rescue can answer for its current capacity and policy. A group may consider your location, the cat’s health and behavior, available space, placement prospects, and other public-safety or care considerations. If it cannot accept your cat, ask about its waitlist, referrals, or resources for keeping the cat safely at home while you pursue another option. Do not leave your cat outside a facility or otherwise abandon them.

These figures are from Best Friends’ data, reported in a July 15, 2026 release, and should not be read as universal rates.

What should I bring when I surrender my cat?

How do I transport my cat safely?

Use a secure cat carrier and follow the receiving organization’s travel instructions. ASPCA guidance for its New York City adoption center requires cats and kittens to leave in a secure carrier, and the Alaska Humane Society’s Anchorage surrender instructions also tell owners to bring one. Those examples support using a carrier; they do not establish a particular brand or model as necessary.

For longer or organized animal relocations, the ASPCA says programs should account for animals’ health, enclosure arrangement, ventilation, climate control, monitoring, and travel conditions. That program-level guidance is not a detailed prescription for every short trip, so ask your shelter or veterinarian if your cat has special transport needs.

Which rehoming route should I choose?

Compare the options by the care your cat needs and what each recipient can actually provide—not only by how quickly a place may be available.

Route What to assess What to confirm
Direct adoption to someone you know or find through a responsible rehoming resource Whether the person can provide a stable home and meet the cat’s known medical and behavior needs That the adopter understands the cat’s history and has a realistic plan for care
Rescue group Whether the group is equipped for this cat’s needs and has a suitable placement plan Whether it can accept the cat, when, and what records or other items it requires
Shelter Whether its services and capacity fit the cat’s circumstances Its intake process, appointment availability, current capacity, fees, paperwork, and alternatives if full

Availability and rules depend on the organization and location. If you need guidance on local legal requirements or animal-control options, ask your local animal-control authority; there is no single fee schedule or intake policy established here for every community.
