Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo keep a cat out of a Christmas tree, manage access first: close the room when you cannot supervise, or use a barrier your cat cannot climb or jump. Set up a cat perch and toys elsewhere, reward the cat for choosing them, and secure the tree to reduce the risk of a tip-over. These steps address holiday trees; they are not a universal solution for every kind of tree.
Choose an access plan before putting up the tree
A closed door is the most reliable way to keep a cat away when you cannot watch it. If the tree must be in an open area, try a pet gate or pen, but check whether your particular cat can scale or clear it. A barrier is only useful if it stays stable and the cat cannot get around it.
Zoetis Petcare notes that barriers with vertical bars may be harder for cats to climb than horizontal or grid-style barriers, but a cat may still jump over one. A barrier manages access; it does not guarantee it.
Compare the practical options
| Option | What it helps with | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Closed room | Prevents access while the door remains shut | Requires a room that can be kept closed |
| Pet gate or pen | Creates a boundary around the tree | Some cats can climb or jump it; assess your cat and setup |
| Perch and play | Gives the cat another place to climb and explore | Does not physically block access to the tree |
| Reward-based training | Reinforces calm behavior away from the tree | Needs repetition and may not change behavior immediately |
| Tree anchoring and safer decorations | Reduces the risk of harm if the cat investigates | Makes the tree safer but does not keep the cat off it |
These approaches are recommended by PetMD, Zoetis Petcare, Cornell Feline Health Center, and the American Humane Society; the sources do not provide controlled comparisons of their success rates.

Offer a better place to climb and play
Put a stable cat tree or perch in an accessible spot away from the holiday tree, along with toys that invite play. When your cat stays calmly away from the tree, plays with its own toys, or comes when called, reward that behavior. Zoetis suggests treats, praise, play, or petting as rewards. Redirection can help meet the cat’s interest in climbing, but it is not a substitute for blocking access when safety is at stake.
Make the tree safer if the cat reaches it
Secure the tree against tipping
Anchor the tree to a stable support. Cornell veterinarian Pamela Perry, DVM, senior veterinary behavior resident at Cornell University Hospital for Animals, said, “I’ve heard many stories about Christmas trees coming down.” Cornell recommends anchoring the tree; the American Humane Society also advises securing it. Anchoring reduces the chance of a tip-over, but it does not deter climbing.

Remove string-like and breakable decorations
Keep tinsel, string, and ribbon off the tree and out of reach. If swallowed, these materials can cause serious digestive injuries: the FDA warns of serious stomach and intestinal damage, and Cornell notes that tinsel can cause an obstruction that may require surgery. Keep breakable ornaments and other small, tempting items out of the cat’s reach.
Keep cords and live-tree water inaccessible
Keep lights and electrical cords out of reach or otherwise protected from chewing. If you have a live tree, block access to its stand and water. Cornell advises using plain water without added chemicals; Cats Protection cautions that real-tree water may contain preservatives. Covering the stand or using a barrier is more dependable than relying on a scent or taste deterrent.

Monitor the setup and change course if needed
Watch whether your cat gets past the barrier, chews branches or cords, or bats at decorations. If it does, adjust the boundary or keep the cat out of the room with the tree. PetMD recommends room restriction as a fallback when other measures do not keep the cat safe.
Avoid spraying your cat with water. PetMD explains that it may make a cat associate you with fear and may only interrupt the behavior while you are present. Focus instead on managing the environment and rewarding behavior you want to see.

Be cautious with scent deterrents
Guidance about pungent scents is not consistent: Cornell mentions them as possible deterrents, while a veterinarian Q&A from Petco, updated September 23, 2025, cautions that citrus essential oils can be toxic to cats. Do not treat essential oils or homemade chemical mixtures as a general solution. Prefer physical access controls, and ask a veterinarian before applying a substance where a cat could lick it.
