A familiar carrier and gradual practice can help, but the right plan depends on your cat’s health, stress tolerance, and whether you’re driving or flying.
How do I travel with my cat?
Use these seven steps to prepare. For a long journey, start well before departure so your cat can explore the carrier and practise short trips without the pressure of travel day.
1. Make the carrier familiar before you leave
Keep the carrier in your cat’s usual environment and let them investigate it at their own pace. You can make it more inviting with familiar bedding. Once your cat is comfortable entering it, practise short car rides and gradually increase their duration. The CDC’s pet travel guidance and the ASPCA’s travel safety tips recommend building up to longer drives.
2. Choose a secure, well-ventilated carrier
Use a carrier that is sturdy, secure, and well ventilated. The CDC says an animal in a crate should have room to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around. In a car, place the carrier where it can be secured so it cannot slide or shift; the AVMA’s pet-travel brochure advises keeping cats confined in a carrier in the car.

3. Make the carrier calmer without blocking airflow
A light blanket or towel over most of the carrier may reduce visual stimulation, but leave openings clear so air can circulate. International Cat Care also advises securing the carrier in the car and keeping the vehicle ventilated at a comfortable temperature. Don’t cover the carrier so heavily that airflow is restricted.
4. Keep the carrier closed during transit
Don’t open the carrier in a moving vehicle or during other transit, even if your cat is vocalizing. International Cat Care puts it plainly: “Never be tempted to open a cat’s carrier, whatever the type of transport, even if they are meowing, as this is not safe for you or your cat.”

5. Check your cat’s health and identification
Before travelling, confirm that vaccinations are up to date, your cat’s microchip details and contact information are current, and you have relevant veterinary records and any necessary medication. Talk with your veterinarian about whether the planned journey is suitable for your cat, especially if they are very young, older, have a chronic health condition, or are short-nosed. Health and respiratory concerns may affect what is safe; the AVMA’s air-travel FAQ discusses air travel and short-nosed animals.
6. Pack for your cat and the length of the trip
Pack familiar bedding and enough of your cat’s usual food and water for the journey, along with a bowl. The CDC also lists a leash, waste bags, grooming supplies, medication, first-aid items, and travel documents among supplies to consider. For longer journeys, International Cat Care recommends spare blankets and absorbent tissues. Choose what to bring based on the trip and your individual cat rather than treating every item as necessary for every journey.

7. Check route, airline, and destination rules before booking
Requirements can differ by airline, destination, and transit point. Before booking, ask the airline directly whether your cat can travel in the cabin, what carrier dimensions and other conditions apply, and whether those rules have changed. Check health certificates, vaccination or testing rules, and entry requirements for every destination and stop. The CDC advises checking pet travel requirements before travelling; its 2026 Yellow Book chapter on travelling with pets notes that international travellers must meet destination and transportation-provider rules.

There is no single best mode for every cat. Compare the options against your cat’s health and stress tolerance, the trip’s duration and connections, carrier security and fit, possible temperature exposure, and the rules for your route.
