A cat stool chart helps you describe what you see; it cannot diagnose why it is happening. On the Purina Institute’s seven-point fecal consistency chart, score 2 is the stated ideal: firm but not hard, pliable, segmented, and easy to pick up with little or no residue. Note the stool’s form, color, frequency, and any other symptoms, then contact your veterinarian when changes are concerning.
What does healthy cat poop look like?
On the Purina Institute chart, ideal stool is score 2: firm but not hard, pliable, segmented, and easy to pick up with little or no residue. The chart describes consistency, chiefly as a reflection of moisture. It is a way to share an observation with your veterinarian, not a test for disease.
The chart’s exact guidance is: “In a healthy dog or cat, stools ideally should be firm but not hard, pliable, segmented and easy to pick up (Score 2).” Purina Institute fecal scoring chart.
How do I use the cat stool chart?
Compare the stool’s shape and texture with the descriptions below. Also note whether it holds its form or leaves residue when picked up. Record what you observe rather than treating a score as a diagnosis; the same score does not establish a cause.

- Natural sand is heavy, to avoid high costs as result of shipping and logistics, and after many years of testing, we arrived at an optimized amount of sand that is enough for the vast majority of cats to use once, yet still remain affordable. The amount of sand supplied in the 3 bags is meant for a one-time use all at once.
- Unlike Other Non-absorbing products, our Cat Litter has a patented Hydrophobic coating, this unique feature allows urine to rest on top of the sand no matter how much your cat tries to bury it, it will pop right back up easily when you move the sand from on top of it.
- Cats Love it! Its the only 100% Natural True Hydrophobic Sand That is Non-toxic and Odorless, Unlike Other Brands That Do Not Use Natural Sand. (Cats are picky animals, some more than others, and will take time to use the sand)
- Unlike cystocentesis which involves an expensive invasive procedure, this method of Cat urine collection is clean, easy, quick and simple, and most importantly non-invasive, which can be done at-home before a visit at the Vet.
- Early detection is important! Stay on top of your Cats health with the 2 testing Strips included and test for the 4 most common indicators for your pet's health - Glucose, Blood in the urine, pH, and Protein.
| Score | Consistency and form | What happens when picked up |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Very hard and dry, often separate pellets | Requires effort to pass; leaves no surface residue |
| 2 | Firm but not hard; pliable and segmented | Easy to pick up, with little or no residue; chart’s stated ideal |
| 3 | Log-shaped, moist surface, little visible segmentation | Leaves residue but holds its form |
| 4 | Very moist and soggy, but still log-shaped | Leaves residue and loses form |
| 5 | Very moist pile rather than a log | Leaves residue and loses form |
| 6 | Textured but shapeless piles or spots | Leaves residue |
| 7 | Watery, with no texture, in flat puddles | Watery stool; no formed shape to pick up |
Scores 1 through 7 describe a progression from very hard, dry stool to watery stool. A score is not a severity ranking that can identify the underlying condition, and the scale does not assess stool color or odor.
What does my cat’s poop mean?
A score tells you how the stool looked and felt, not what caused the change. Changes in consistency can help flag a problem, but several conditions can produce overlapping signs. For example, Cornell notes that diarrhea, blood in stool, vomiting, weight loss, lethargy, and reduced appetite can occur with feline inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but also with other diseases. A veterinarian may need your cat’s history and a diagnostic workup to determine the cause. Cornell Feline Health Center: Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

What color should cat poop be?
Purina’s consumer guide describes typical stool as dark brown and formed. Color is a separate observation from the consistency score: the chart does not assign scores by color, and color alone cannot diagnose a disease. Purina: Cat Poop Chart.
Black stool can be a sign of blood loss in the stomach or intestinal tract, according to Cornell. If you see black or bloody stool, or a color change alongside other signs of illness, contact your veterinarian promptly rather than trying to identify a disease from appearance alone. Cornell Feline Health Center: Diarrhea.

When should I call the vet for cat diarrhea?
Purina advises seeking veterinary help as soon as possible if diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours, contains blood, or occurs with lethargy or poor appetite. Do not wait for the chart score to change if your cat has one of these warning signs. Purina: Cat Diarrhea.
For the appointment, track how often diarrhea occurs and what it looks like. Your veterinarian may ask for a fresh stool sample or recommend further tests. Mention any accompanying signs, such as vomiting, reduced appetite, or lethargy, because the stool’s appearance alone cannot explain the cause.

What does hard, dry cat poop mean?
Hard, dry pellets match score 1 on the chart and can help you describe what you are seeing. They do not, by themselves, confirm constipation or show what treatment is needed. Cornell describes constipation as fairly common in cats and notes that recurrent constipation can progress to obstipation. Repeated straining, hard stool, or worsening signs merit veterinary attention rather than home treatment based on a chart. Cornell Feline Health Center: Constipation.
