Rhinitis is inflammation of the lining of a cat’s nose; when the sinuses are inflamed too, the condition is called rhinosinusitis. Sneezing or nasal discharge can result from a sudden viral infection, but persistent or recurring signs may have other causes. Because treatment depends on what is causing the problem, a veterinarian should assess ongoing symptoms—and breathing difficulty needs urgent care.
What rhinitis means in cats
Rhinitis describes inflammation of the nasal lining, not a confirmed cause. It often occurs alongside sinus inflammation, known as sinusitis; together, the conditions are called rhinosinusitis. A runny nose or sneezing is a sign, not a diagnosis, and the same signs can arise from several different problems.
What causes feline rhinitis?
Viral infections and secondary bacterial infection
According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, viral infection is the most common cause of sudden rhinitis or sinusitis in cats. Feline herpesvirus, which causes feline viral rhinotracheitis, and feline calicivirus are prominent causes of upper respiratory disease. A bacterial infection may develop after a viral infection; antibiotics do not treat the virus itself.
Herpesvirus exposure is common, but it should not be confused with rhinitis prevalence. Cornell’s Feline Health Center reports that up to 97% of cats are exposed to feline herpesvirus in their lifetime and infection becomes lifelong in up to 80% of exposed cats. Those figures describe herpesvirus exposure and infection, not the proportion of cats with rhinitis. The year of the figures was not stated in the retrieved page metadata. Cornell’s overview of feline respiratory infections explains the broader respiratory context.

Other possible causes
Allergic disease can be seasonal or associated with indoor allergens. Fungal disease is another possibility, including cryptococcosis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans; Aspergillus and Penicillium are less common fungal causes. Persistent or recurrent signs may also prompt a veterinarian to investigate a foreign object, nasal polyp, dental disease, tumor, or lasting inflammation after severe acute viral injury. Chronic discharge should not automatically be assumed to be a lingering virus.
Symptoms to watch for
Signs vary, and none on its own establishes the cause. Cats with nasal inflammation or upper respiratory disease may have:

- Non-Medicated Relief for Dry or Stuf
- Moisturizes dry, irritated, or crusty nasal passages due to low humidity, heated s, air travel, allergies or colds
- Little Remedies
- No Pseudoephedrine No Alcohol No Artificial Colors
- Nasal discharge or repeated sneezing
- Pawing at the face, snoring, or noisy breathing
- Eye discharge or conjunctivitis
- Lethargy or reduced appetite
- Open-mouth breathing or labored inhalation
Congestion can reduce a cat’s sense of smell, which may make food less appealing and contribute to poor intake or weight loss. Facial swelling or bloody, persistent discharge can occur with conditions such as nasal cryptococcosis, among other possible causes; they warrant veterinary assessment rather than a home diagnosis.
When to contact a veterinarian
Contact a veterinarian promptly for persistent or worsening nasal signs, bloody discharge, facial swelling, marked lethargy, dehydration, or a cat that is not eating. These signs may indicate severe illness or a cause that needs specific testing.

Open-mouth breathing, labored breathing, or other apparent difficulty breathing is urgent. Contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately instead of trying to manage the problem at home.
How veterinarians diagnose the cause
Evaluation usually begins with the cat’s history and a physical examination. The duration and pattern of signs, overall condition, and examination findings help guide whether further testing is appropriate. A first assessment may support an initial treatment plan, while chronic, recurrent, severe, or atypical cases may need more investigation.

Depending on the case, diagnostic work can include imaging such as radiographs or CT, rhinoscopy to examine the nasal passages, nasal biopsy, or targeted testing for infectious causes. A veterinarian may also evaluate for fungal disease, dental problems, polyps, foreign material, or tumors. Testing does not always identify a definitive cause, so the plan may need to address both likely contributors and the cat’s symptoms.

Treatment depends on the cause and severity. Supportive care may help a cat stay comfortable and maintain nutrition while the veterinarian treats or investigates the underlying problem. It does not replace diagnosis when signs are persistent, severe, or unusual.

Supportive care
Veterinarian-guided care may include keeping the cat hydrated, gently clearing nasal or eye discharge, and encouraging food intake. Humidification or saline nebulization may be recommended in some cases. Ask the veterinarian what is suitable for your cat; a device, solution, or home procedure should not be assumed appropriate for every animal.
Treatment for infection or other specific causes
Antibiotics may be used when bacterial disease is present or suspected, but they do not work against viruses. Fungal rhinosinusitis requires antifungal treatment directed at the identified fungal cause. Other findings, such as a dental or structural problem, call for a plan tailored to that diagnosis.
Severe or chronic cases
A severely affected cat may need hospitalization, fluids, or nutritional support. Chronic rhinitis can be difficult to cure, particularly when lasting inflammation remains after an acute illness or no definitive cause is found. In those cases, care may focus on reducing signs, protecting appetite and comfort, and monitoring for changes.
Reducing respiratory infection risk
Vaccination can reduce the severity of some respiratory diseases, but it does not prevent every infection or eliminate every pathogen. Cornell’s Feline Health Center notes that vaccines have not eliminated the highly contagious pathogens that cause serious respiratory disease. Ask your veterinarian which vaccines fit your cat’s health and exposure risk. Keeping outdoor cats indoors minimizes exposure to Cryptococcus neoformans, according to Cornell’s respiratory infection guidance.
