Give your cat a safe place to hide, reduce the noise and flashes where you can, and let it choose whether to seek contact or keep its distance. Don’t pull it from hiding or make it listen to a frightening sound on purpose. If noise fear is new, worsening or disrupting daily life, ask a veterinarian to assess it.
What to do while your cat is frightened
Start by making the home secure and giving your cat options. During fireworks or another predictable outdoor noise event, close windows, doors and cat flaps if your cat might bolt. Keep identification details current, including microchip details, in case it escapes. Fireworks advice is event-specific; it is not a reason to confine every cat indoors at all times. Cats Protection’s fireworks guidance and Blue Cross guidance recommend practical precautions for noisy events.
- Make familiar hiding places available, such as a box lined with blankets or a covered bed. If your cat prefers a perch, make sure it is stable and safe.
- Let the cat hide without blocking it in, coaxing it out or abruptly shutting it away in a room. Some cats become more stressed when their usual territory is restricted.
- Close curtains or blinds to soften flashes from fireworks.
- Low-volume TV or radio may mask sudden sounds if your cat is already comfortable with those sounds. Don’t introduce unfamiliar or loud background noise.
- Stay calm and let your cat decide whether it wants company, contact or space. Don’t punish fear-related behavior.
- If the event changes your cat’s routine, make sure it can reach its usual food, water and litter tray.
Blue Cross notes that “Loud and sudden noises can make cats anxious and stressed, so fireworks season can be a tough time for our feline friends.” Its guidance was reviewed on 11 December 2025 and lists an animal behaviourist and a veterinary surgeon as approvers.
How to set up a useful hiding place
Choose somewhere your cat already likes, if possible. A good retreat is familiar, quiet, easy to enter and leave, and not somewhere the cat can be trapped. A cardboard box with familiar blankets may be enough; a covered bed or cat cave is another option. Buying a new bed is not necessary if your cat already feels safe in a box, under furniture or in another suitable spot. Cats Protection’s advice on hiding also recommends considering a veterinarian’s assessment if hiding increases.

A cat pheromone plug-in diffuser is an optional environmental aid, not a guaranteed treatment. Cats Protection suggests placing one where the cat spends much of its time and trying it a couple of weeks before fireworks season. A familiar retreat and sensible noise reduction remain useful regardless of whether you use a diffuser.
Can a cat become less afraid of noises?
For recurring triggers, gradual desensitisation paired with something the cat likes may help. The aim is to build comfort without pushing the cat into fear. Cats Protection’s 2025 desensitisation guide describes playing a recording at a very low level in a comfortable setting, then increasing it gradually only after the cat is comfortable across repeated sessions. Pairing the sound with a reward or other positive experience is counter-conditioning.

- Choose a quiet time, not the day of an imminent noisy event, and make sure the cat can leave the training area.
- Play a recording so quietly that the cat shows no fearful body language. The guide’s example percentages are illustrative, not universal settings for every device or cat.
- Pair the sound with something the cat enjoys, such as a treat, if it is willing to take one.
- Repeat at a level the cat tolerates. Increase the volume in small steps only after comfort is consistent across sessions.
- If fear appears, stop or reduce the sound and return to an easier level. Do not flood the cat with loud noise.
Body language and comfort matter more than a particular volume setting. A suitably trained behaviorist can help plan behavior modification. Controlled sound exposure also appears in kitten socialisation guidance for ages two to eight weeks, but that preventive advice is not a reason to expose an already frightened cat to intense noise. Cats Protection’s kitten socialisation guidance covers that early-life context.

Arrange veterinary advice if fear is prolonged or worsening, begins alongside other behavior changes, or interferes with eating, drinking, toileting or normal activity. New or increased hiding deserves attention rather than being assumed to be a personality quirk: pain or another medical issue can change a cat’s behavior. A veterinarian can assess possible medical causes and, when appropriate, refer you to a qualified cat behaviorist.

Contact a veterinarian about increased urination, straining, blood in the urine, or repeated attempts to urinate without passing urine. These signs should not be dismissed as anxiety; Blue Cross flags them as reasons for veterinary contact because they may indicate a urinary problem such as cystitis.
