A cat’s cough can sound like an attempt to bring up a hairball, but coughing is a symptom—not a diagnosis—and the sound alone cannot identify its cause. If your cat is breathing with its mouth open, struggling to breathe, has blue, gray, or pale gums, or collapses, seek emergency veterinary care now. For a recurring or persistent cough, arrange a veterinary assessment.
Why does my cat keep coughing like something is stuck in its throat?
Coughing usually reflects irritation or inflammation somewhere in the airways, but several conditions can cause similar episodes. Possibilities include asthma or bronchitis, respiratory infection, parasites such as heartworm or lungworm, inhaled irritants or foreign material, and less commonly tumors or other disease. Heartworm-associated respiratory disease can resemble asthma, so appearance alone is not enough to diagnose the cause.
Feline asthma is chronic inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine estimates that asthma affects 1% to 5% of cats; that estimate is for asthma, not for coughing generally. WSU lists possible triggers such as dust, pollen, mold, smoke, aerosols, scented products, and litter dust, while noting that many cases have no known cause. WSU’s feline asthma guidance explains the condition and its possible triggers.
As the AAHA-hosted article puts it, “A cough and a hairball are not synonymous,” says Janice Dye, DVM, MS, PhD, Diplomate, ACVIM. A cat may crouch low and stretch its neck during a coughing fit, and the episode may end without producing anything. Retching and vomiting can also be mistaken for coughing from a brief description. If it is safe to do so, record an episode to show your veterinarian; do not delay urgent care to get a video.

When is a cat’s cough an emergency?
Go to an emergency veterinarian immediately if your cat has open-mouth breathing, pronounced effort or distress while breathing, blue, gray, or pale gums, collapse, or a severe asthma-like attack. Do not wait to see whether these signs pass.
If there are no emergency signs, contact your veterinarian when the cough is persistent, severe, productive, repeatedly recurring, or accompanied by other signs of illness, weight loss, or breathing difficulty. A rare, isolated cough in an otherwise well cat may be less urgent, but recurring or persistent symptoms still warrant assessment. VCA’s guidance on coughing in cats and PetMD’s veterinary-reviewed overview describe signs that merit veterinary attention.

How will a veterinarian investigate the cough?
The work-up depends on the cough’s duration and severity, the cat’s history, and examination findings. The veterinarian may recommend chest X-rays, blood work, heartworm or other parasite testing, a sample from the lower airways for testing or culture, or endoscopy. Some procedures may require sedation.
Asthma is assessed by combining the history, examination, and imaging, and sometimes airway sampling. There is no single definitive test for feline asthma; the veterinarian must also consider other diseases that can produce overlapping signs. Cornell’s feline asthma information and WSU’s guidance explain why diagnosis relies on the overall clinical picture.

What treatment helps a coughing cat?
Treatment depends on the cause. For asthma, veterinarians commonly use corticosteroids to reduce airway inflammation and may add a bronchodilator to open the airways. Bronchodilators generally are not used alone because they do not treat the underlying inflammation. Medication may be oral, inhaled, or injectable, depending on the cat and the treatment plan. Infections, parasites, inhaled foreign material, and other causes require different, cause-specific care. Cornell’s overview of asthma treatment describes these options; your veterinarian should determine what is appropriate for your cat.
Do not give human cough medicine or leftover prescription medication unless your veterinarian specifically directs you to. If inhaled medication is prescribed, ask the clinic how to use the prescribed device and medication together; do not choose a spacer or change treatment on your own.

What can you do at home while arranging care?
- Note how often the cough happens, how long episodes last, and whether breathing, appetite, or energy changes afterward.
- Record possible exposures, such as smoke, aerosols, scented products, or dusty litter, and bring the information—and a video if you have one—to the appointment.
- Reduce obvious irritants such as smoke or aerosol exposure where practical. This is not a substitute for diagnosis or prescribed treatment. Cornell notes that air purification and allergen avoidance have not been rigorously tested or proven as feline asthma treatments.
