Cats.com rates the brand 8/10 (48/60, A−) in its review updated August 7, 2026; that is an editorial rating, not a veterinary or regulatory certification. Whether a particular food suits your cat depends on its nutritional-adequacy statement, life stage, recipe and any health needs.
What does Dave’s Pet Food make for cats?
According to Cats.com’s August 2026 review, Dave’s range includes Naturally Healthy wet and dry foods, 95% Premium wet foods, and Functional Diets with restricted levels of nutrients such as phosphorus, magnesium or protein. Wet recipes appear in pâté, stew, gravy and aspic formats. The review lists cans from 3 to 12.5 ounces, variety packs, and one dry cat-food formula in 4- and 20-pound bags. Products and package sizes may change.
The review reports that Dave Ratner created the brand in 2001 with help from a veterinary nutritionist, and describes it as originating in a retail business, with distribution through independent stores and online. It also reports that the company is based in Agawam, Massachusetts; most foods are made in the United States, while some canned cat foods are made by a co-packer in Thailand. The review says tuna in Thai-made wet recipes is sourced from Thailand and that vitamin packs are an exception to the company’s statement that it does not source ingredients from China. These are reported company and review details, not evidence that every product or ingredient has the same origin. Cats.com’s review is the source for these brand and product-line details.
Is Dave’s cat food good?
Cats.com gives Dave’s 8/10 overall, or 48/60 points and an A−, using its own review rubric. That score is an editorial assessment of the brand and reviewed products; it does not establish clinical health outcomes or mean every recipe is appropriate for every cat.

The review reports that its reviewer’s cats ate the recipes, particularly the kibble and turkey food, and liked the newer tuna-and-goat-milk recipe. This is anecdotal palatability feedback, not a controlled feeding or preference test. The article also describes mixed customer comments about dry pâté texture and dented cans; those comments do not establish how common either experience is. The material cited for this review does not establish brand-wide health benefits through independent clinical studies or feeding trials.

| Recipe | What the review reports | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Naturally Healthy Grain-Free Turkey Formula wet food | Turkey is the primary protein and chicken broth supplies moisture. Cats.com lists 33 calories per ounce and an estimated $0.38 per ounce. Its reproduced guaranteed analysis lists 10% crude protein, 5% crude fat, 1% crude fiber and 78% moisture; its calculated dry-matter analysis is about 45.5% protein, 22.73% fat and 16.77% carbohydrate. | A useful recipe to inspect, but not a universal recommendation. The review says its nutrient charts are automatically calculated from guaranteed analyses and may not represent typical nutrient values. As-fed and dry-matter percentages use different bases and should not be compared as though equivalent. |
| Naturally Healthy Tuna in Gravy with Goat Milk | The review identifies this as a newer recipe and lists 26 calories per ounce and an estimated $0.42 per ounce. | Check the current ingredient panel, formulation and package details; the review’s listed figures are not a current retailer quote. |
| Restricted Diet Phosphorus Chicken Liver & Chicken pâté | The review describes it as lower in phosphorus and says it is not nutritionally complete and is for intermittent feeding only. | Do not use it as a sole long-term diet based on a general review. Discuss whether it is appropriate with your cat’s veterinarian. |
| Naturally Healthy adult dry food | Cats.com lists one dry formula and assigns it a C− in its recipe table. | This is the publication’s rating, not a regulatory grade or a finding that the food is unsuitable for every cat. |
| Renal-friendly sweet-potato soft and chewy treat | The review lists it as a complementary treat, not a meal. | A product description or name does not establish that a treat manages or treats kidney disease. |
When comparing two foods, compare their nutritional-adequacy statements and life stages first, then ingredients, guaranteed analysis, calories, moisture, texture, feeding directions and cost for the package you can actually buy. For a restricted or therapeutic diet, veterinary guidance is a prerequisite, not just another preference to weigh.
Does Dave’s make a restricted-diet cat food?
Yes. Cats.com lists Functional Diets, including the Restricted Diet Phosphorus Chicken Liver & Chicken pâté. The review specifically says this recipe is not nutritionally complete and is intended for intermittent feeding only. Do not treat the phrase “restricted diet” as proof that it is a complete prescription diet or suitable for a cat with kidney disease; ask your veterinarian whether it fits your cat’s diagnosis and feeding plan. The recipe listing provides the product-specific context.

Has Dave’s Pet Food been recalled?
An FDA-hosted company announcement records a voluntary recall announced June 12, 2018, for one lot of Dave’s 95% Premium beef canned dog food because of potentially elevated beef thyroid hormone. The affected lot comprised 548 cases of 13-ounce cans with a specified UPC and date code. The notice says the FDA analyzed the lot after complaints involving four dogs with low thyroid test results. FDA’s page says the recall was completed and terminated; the company announcement said no other Dave’s products were affected. This was a dog-food recall, not a cat-food recall. Read the FDA-hosted recall notice for the product and lot details. The FDA notes that it posts company recall announcements as a public service and does not endorse a company or product.
