Bradycardia means a cat’s heart is beating more slowly than expected for its situation. It is a finding, not a diagnosis: the significance depends on the rhythm, the cat’s circulation and condition, and the underlying cause. A slow heart rate in a weak, cold, collapsed, or possibly obstructed cat can be an emergency.

What counts as a slow heart rate in a cat?

Merck Veterinary Manual’s emergency triage table lists a heart rate below 150 beats per minute (bpm) as bradycardia in cats; it also notes that cats in shock may develop rates below 120 bpm. These are clinical reference points, not a home test or a diagnosis on their own. Stress, illness, anesthesia, body temperature, pulse quality, and the ECG rhythm all affect how a veterinarian interprets a measured rate.

Sinus bradycardia is a regular sinus rhythm that is slower than expected for the species and the animal’s circumstances. A pulse count alone cannot establish whether the rhythm is sinus or identify why the rate is slow.

What can cause bradycardia in cats?

Bradycardia can result from a temporary response to illness or treatment, or from a problem affecting the heart’s electrical system. Important possibilities include:

  • Advanced Oscillometric Algorithm for Pets:Optimized specifically for cats and dogs with faster heart rates and different vascular characteristics. Intelligent motion filtering improves measurement stability for more consistent readings.
  • Continuous & One-Click Measurement:Supports repeated measurements with simple one-button operation. Recommended to take 5–7 readings and calculate the average for improved reference accuracy.
  • 240 Sets Memory for Dual Users:Stores up to 240 records (2 users × 120 readings each). Easily track long-term trends for multiple pets, helping with daily health management at home.
  • Multi-Size Cuffs Included:Comes with small, medium, and large cuffs to fit different limb circumferences. Adjustable chest strap ensures a secure and comfortable fit for dogs and cats of various sizes.
  • Medications or anesthesia: Anesthetic overdose and drugs that increase vagal tone or reduce sympathetic tone can slow the heart rate.
  • Systemic illness and increased vagal tone: Respiratory, neurologic, eye, gastrointestinal, or urinary disease may affect heart rate through increased vagal activity.
  • Low body temperature or endocrine disease: Hypothermia and hypothyroidism are recognized causes of sinus bradycardia.
  • Intrinsic rhythm disease: Sick sinus syndrome can involve sinus pauses or arrest and escape beats, sometimes alongside episodes of supraventricular tachycardia. Weakness or fainting may occur.
  • Severe hyperkalemia: A dangerous rise in blood potassium, particularly with urethral obstruction, can disrupt cardiac conduction and cause a slow or abnormal rhythm.

Why urinary obstruction and high potassium are especially concerning

A cat with a urinary blockage can develop severe hyperkalemia. The 2025 International Cat Care lower urinary tract guidelines describe possible ECG changes including reduced or absent P waves, widened QRS complexes, shortened QT intervals, and tall, tented or enlarged reversed T waves. These changes require veterinary interpretation; an ECG finding or slow pulse should be considered alongside examination and laboratory results.

A 2026 review of feline medical emergencies reports that, in critically ill cats, bradycardia below 120 bpm together with hypothermia below 35–35.9°C was 98% specific for potassium above 8.0 mmol/L. That figure comes from the review’s stated clinical context; it is not a universal screening rule and should not be used to rule hyperkalemia in or out at home.

Signs that need urgent veterinary attention

Some cats have bradycardia detected during an examination or monitoring and show no obvious signs. When the slow rate affects circulation, signs may include weakness, reduced ability to exercise, collapse, or fainting. A slow, irregular heartbeat is also a reason for prompt assessment.

Seek emergency veterinary care now if a cat with a slow pulse is weak, collapses, feels unusually cold, has weak pulses, or may be unable to urinate. Do not wait for a home device to confirm the heart rate or try to interpret a consumer monitor before seeking care.

How veterinarians diagnose the cause

The veterinarian assesses the cat’s overall condition and circulation, confirms the heart rate, and uses an ECG when an arrhythmia is suspected to identify the rhythm. The next tests depend on the likely cause and may include blood tests, temperature assessment, blood-pressure monitoring, and a review of medications or recent anesthesia.

When obstruction or hyperkalemia is suspected

Evaluation may include electrolytes, kidney values, and acid-base assessment, alongside ECG and blood-pressure monitoring when feasible. These results help establish whether potassium disturbance or another systemic problem is contributing to the rhythm.

When weakness or collapse comes and goes

An intermittent problem may not appear during a brief examination. ACVIM guidance supports cardiovascular evaluation that can include ECG and echocardiography, with telemetry or Holter monitoring when needed to capture episodic rhythm changes.

How bradycardia is treated

Treatment depends on the cause and whether the slow rhythm is affecting the cat. Merck Veterinary Manual states: “Treatment is targeted at resolving the underlying cause.” A slow rate without associated problems may not require treatment directed at the rate itself, while weakness, exercise intolerance, or collapse can change that decision.
