The American Shetland Pony is a U.S.-developed Shetland type descended from ponies imported from the Shetland Isles and selectively bred in America. The American Shetland Pony Club (ASPC) recognizes four divisions—Modern, Modern Pleasure, Classic and Foundation. For registered U.S. Shetlands, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) lists a maximum height of 11.2 hands, or 46 inches, at the withers. American Shetlands take part in in-hand, driving and youth riding activities, but breed identity alone cannot tell you whether an individual pony is suitable for a child or a particular handler.
What is an American Shetland Pony?
American Shetlands trace back to Shetland ponies imported from the Shetland Isles. Selective breeding in the United States shaped those imports into a distinct American type. The ASPC says it was established in 1888 to organize U.S. interest in Shetlands and maintain pedigree records; its history describes the breed’s development from imported stock. ASPC breed history
The British Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society is a separate organization, formed in 1890. That date refers to the British society, not the founding of the ASPC. Shetland Pony Stud-Book Society breed history
How big does an American Shetland Pony get?
USEF gives 11.2 hands (46 inches) at the withers as the maximum height for a registered U.S. Shetland. This is a height ceiling, not an average or a description of every pony. Measure an individual pony rather than estimating its size from the breed name. USEF Shetland breed overview

What is the difference between Modern, Modern Pleasure, Classic and Foundation Shetlands?
ASPC recognizes four divisions. Its broad descriptions distinguish them by refinement and animation, substance, and resemblance to earlier imported Shetlands. These are general type distinctions, not a replacement for the current show rules.
| Division | Broad distinction |
|---|---|
| Modern | More refined and animated than the earlier imported type, in ASPC’s broad division descriptions. |
| Modern Pleasure | A separate ASPC division within the Modern categories; consult current rules for its show requirements. |
| Classic | Generally associated with more substance and less refinement than the Modern type. |
| Foundation | Emphasizes resemblance to the earlier imported Shetland type. |
These summaries convey broad contrasts only; the ASPC’s 2026 Official Rulebook is the place to check current class and division requirements.

What activities are American Shetlands suited to?
USEF lists several kinds of competition and activity for Shetlands, including in-hand classes, driving and youth riding. Its overview names in-hand conformation, trail and jumping, as well as harness pleasure driving, combined driving and roadster classes. ASPC also describes hardiness and driving aptitude. Those breed-level descriptions do not establish that every pony is trained or suitable for each activity. USEF Shetland breed overview
Driving
Shetlands are represented in multiple harness-driving formats. For a pony being prepared to drive, choose a harness for that individual’s measurements and intended discipline; a knowledgeable fitter can help ensure the fit is appropriate. A breed description is not a substitute for evaluating the pony’s training, condition and handling.

In-hand and riding classes
USEF lists in-hand conformation, trail and jumping, along with youth riding. A pony’s actual experience, training and physical condition matter when deciding whether it is ready for a class or rider.

There is no breed-wide guarantee that an American Shetland is child-safe, beginner-safe or a suitable match for a particular young rider. Assess the individual pony’s temperament, training, health and condition, and consider the child’s experience and the intended activity. A qualified equine professional can help evaluate a prospective match; consult an equine veterinarian about health and care questions.
