How Patient Foster Care Helped Dora Find a Lasting Home

After a difficult placement history, Dora settled in at her own pace with foster caregiver Roma M., who adopted her four months later.

A gradual introduction and an attentive caregiver helped Dora, a sensitive cat with a disrupted placement history, settle into a new home. Four months after beginning to foster her, Roma M. adopted her. Their story shows what patience and attention to a cat’s signals can look like—without suggesting that every cat will adjust on the same schedule.

Dora’s path through foster care and adoption

Dora entered the ASPCA Los Angeles Kitten Foster Program in May 2020, after coming from Baldwin Park Animal Care Center. The program supported kittens under eight weeks old who were too young to be cared for at Baldwin Park and Downey Animal Care Centers. Dora was adopted about a month later, but her family returned her the following year because of a housing change.

After that return, concerns emerged about handling, overstimulation and aggression toward other cats. Roma, who wanted a cat but had never owned one, signed up to foster with the ASPCA in Los Angeles. She began fostering Dora in July 2022 and was told Dora was easily overstimulated, nervous around new people and stressed by changes to her routine. The ASPCA recounted their story on June 17, 2025, in its account of Dora and Roma.

How Roma gave Dora time to settle in

Roma started Dora in a small area near the kitchen. She narrated her movements, then left so Dora could become familiar with her voice without being pressed to interact. Dora’s exploration expanded at her own pace: within a week she ventured into the hallway; days later, she explored Roma’s bedroom at night; after about two weeks, she slept on Roma’s bed. The ASPCA account says she later began exploring the apartment during the day.

After four months, Roma adopted Dora. At the time of the ASPCA story, Dora had lived with Roma longer than in any other environment.

What the story suggests for someone fostering a nervous cat

Dora’s experience is one household’s account, not a guarantee that another cat will settle in on the same timeline or respond to the same approach. It does, however, illustrate how a foster caregiver can take a cat’s reported sensitivities seriously and let the cat control the pace of initial contact and exploration.

VivaElixir Pet Eye Health for Dogs, Cats, Cattle, Sheep, Horses, Birds and Puppies, Kitten - 1 Tube 0.35 oz /10g
  • FOR ANIMAL USE ONLY: Contains a tube of 10 grams of ophthalmic ointment, suitable for animals of all ages.
  • EASY APPLICATION: Administer topically into the animal's eye 2 to 4 times a day, as needed. (Can be applied with a clean finger)
  • Fresh Product Promise: Date on tube indicates when it was made, not when it expired. Our ointment stays fresh for two years from the date of manufacture. If you are not satisfied with the result, please contact us and we will make it right.
  • Ask about the cat’s history and sensitivities. Roma had been told Dora was nervous around new people and easily overstimulated, which helped her approach the introduction with those needs in mind.
  • Make room for gradual exploration. Roma began with a small area and allowed Dora to venture farther when ready rather than expecting her to explore the whole apartment immediately.
  • Watch body language and keep interactions brief when needed. Roma says she pays attention to Dora’s signals and keeps petting sessions short when Dora is overstimulated. She describes Dora as sometimes pouncing on her foot and then walking away.
  • Account for the caregiver’s own stress. Roma says caring for Dora taught her to regulate her own stress because Dora becomes anxious when she is anxious.

Roma’s broader advice is to offer care and understanding when an animal has moved through multiple environments, and to pay attention to body language. The story frames Dora’s behavior in the context of her experiences rather than as simple misbehavior; it does not establish a universal explanation for cats who react to handling or other animals.

Where to ask about fostering

The ASPCA story listed foster opportunities in Los Angeles for cats, New York City, Columbus, Ohio, and Weaverville, North Carolina, for dogs. Those were the locations reported in the June 2025 account, not a guarantee of current openings. If you are elsewhere, contact a local shelter or rescue to ask whether it has a foster program and what support and expectations apply.
