The most useful conversations help veterinary teams understand what matters to a family, and help families understand the diagnosis, options, and trade-offs without pressure or jargon. There is no single treatment plan that fits every pet: decisions depend on the cancer, the pet’s needs, and the family’s priorities and circumstances.
Start with what matters to your pet and your family
Good communication is a shared process, not a test of whether an owner has understood a list of medical terms. The veterinary team can make room for questions and concerns; the family can say what it hopes for, what it fears, and what it can manage.
Open-ended questions invite more than a yes-or-no answer. A veterinarian might ask, “What has been going on?” or “What are your thoughts about the options we have discussed?” These example prompts appear in the 2016 AAHA Oncology Guidelines. The 2026 AAHA communication guidance emphasizes open-ended inquiry, reflective listening, transparency, and nonjudgmental support.
Reflective listening means paraphrasing a concern to check that it has been heard correctly. For example: “It sounds like keeping her comfortable and avoiding frequent stressful visits are your biggest concerns. Have I understood?” Families can correct the summary or add what is missing.

Personal, family, cultural, and financial circumstances can shape what care is feasible or acceptable. Sharing those circumstances is not a failure to care for a pet; it helps the team discuss options that fit the household rather than assume every family can choose the same path.
Make the diagnosis and uncertainty understandable
Ask the veterinarian to explain the cancer in plain language, including what is known and what is not yet certain. If a term such as “stage” or “palliation” comes up, ask what it means for this pet. Palliation means aiming to relieve symptoms or improve comfort rather than cure the cancer.

Before comparing treatments, make sure you understand the diagnosis and what additional tests, if any, could clarify. Ask how the tumor type and stage affect the choices. A clear conversation distinguishes a likely outcome from a possibility, and explains when information is uncertain rather than presenting a prediction as a guarantee.
Compare options by goal, benefit, burden, and quality of life
Ask what each option is intended to achieve. Cancer treatment may aim for a cure or for palliation; the appropriate goal and plan depend on the tumor, the patient, and the client’s preferences. Evaluate a treatment’s response against the goal agreed on at the outset, rather than assuming every treatment is intended to cure.

For each realistic option, discuss the likely benefit alongside its burdens and uncertainties. Include side effects, comfort, time and frequency of visits, treatment duration, home-care needs, cost, and the support the pet may need. Ask how the team will assess quality of life and what changes should prompt a call or a change in the plan. The FDA’s owner guidance is written about dogs with cancer, but its questions can help families prepare for a veterinary discussion:
- What treatments are available?
- What is the prognosis with each treatment?
- What are the side effects of each treatment, and how might they affect my pet’s quality of life?
- How long will treatment take?
- Will this treatment cure my pet’s cancer, or is it intended to make my pet more comfortable?
- What is the cost of each treatment?
- How many veterinary visits will be needed?
The FDA article quotes Dr. Linda Troutman of its Center for Veterinary Medicine as saying that side effects from cancer treatment are usually fewer than those seen in people and that veterinarians work to manage them and maintain quality of life. That general statement is not a promise about an individual animal; ask the veterinarian what effects are possible for your pet and how they would be managed.

Cost and practical capacity belong in the conversation early, not as an afterthought. Tell the team if visit schedules, home care, or expenses are difficult to manage. The aim is to understand the options and their consequences together, without implying that one choice is best for every family.

Before leaving, clarify what happens next: which decision needs to be made now, what can wait, who to contact with questions, and when the pet will be reassessed. Ask what signs at home should lead to an earlier call. A shared plan can also state how the team will judge whether treatment is meeting its goal and what alternatives may be considered if the pet’s needs change.

Consider specialist input and coordinated care
A veterinary oncologist may help explain the diagnosis, treatment options, and likely trade-offs. Referral does not have to mean that the primary veterinarian steps away: the primary-care team and specialist can coordinate records, recommendations, and follow-up. Ask who will send the medical records, who will explain the specialist’s recommendations, and which clinic to contact for ongoing concerns.
AAHA’s 2026 oncology guidance also discusses teleconsultation as a possible adjunct where available. Ask your veterinarian whether it is an option in your situation; availability and suitability can vary.
AAHA estimates that cancer affects 50% of dogs and approximately 30% of cats over age 10. Those figures apply to pets over that age, not to pets of every age, and do not predict an individual pet’s diagnosis or outcome. The 2026 AAHA Oncology Guidelines are professional guidance, not an individual diagnosis or treatment plan. For questions specific to your pet, discuss the case with your veterinarian.
