The most effective fence change depends on how your dog gets out. Watch the yard to identify the route—over or through the fence, under it, through a gate, or out a door—then address that weak point. Supervision and temporary barriers provide backup while you make changes, and boredom or fear may need attention alongside the fence.

First, identify how your dog escapes

Observe your dog outdoors and inspect the yard for clues: disturbed soil, chew marks, a loose board, a gate that does not latch, or a spot where the dog can climb or jump. If the escape happens too quickly to see, a supervised session may reveal the route. A fence modification aimed at the wrong route can leave the actual exit open.

Also check whether the dog is leaving through an exterior doorway rather than the yard perimeter. That calls for door training and indoor management, not just a higher fence.

Choose a fence fix for the route

If your dog climbs or jumps

A fence-top roller can help prevent a dog from getting a foothold. Best Friends Animal Society says rollers can be mounted on existing wood or chain-link fences; check the kit’s span, brackets, end caps, fence compatibility, and installation requirements before choosing one. Rollers are one practical option, not a tested guarantee.

Other possibilities include increasing the fence height with coated wire-mesh fencing, adding a flat-top extension that projects about one foot into the enclosure, or using an upward-angled extension. For a dog that has climbed other fences, Best Friends also lists full overhead coverage as an option. An Austin Humane Society handout describes an inward-tilted extension at about 45 degrees, noting that it may not need to add much height. These designs differ in construction and suitability; assess the existing fence and layout rather than treating them as interchangeable.

If your dog digs under the fence

Options described by Austin Humane Society include burying chicken wire along the base with sharp edges rolled inward, placing large rocks at the base, or laying chain-link fencing on the ground. Avoid leaving sharp wire edges exposed, and choose a layout that fits the site and can be secured safely.

For coyote exclusion specifically, Humane World for Animals describes extending a fence at least 12 inches underground or installing an L-shaped mesh apron that extends outward at least 18 inches and is secured with landscaping staples. Those dimensions come from coyote guidance; they are not a universal engineered specification for every dog or property.

If your dog chews the fence

For chewing through a wood fence, Austin Humane Society suggests adding chain-link on the inside. Inspect the full span for gaps and vulnerable sections, and make sure the added material is firmly attached without creating sharp edges or snagging hazards.

If your dog opens a gate

Choose a different latch or gate material based on what is failing. Animal-resistant latches are available, according to Austin Humane Society. Check that the gate closes and latches reliably every time; a stronger latch will not help if the gate is misaligned or the dog is exploiting a gap beside it.

If your dog bolts through a door

Practice a sit-and-wait routine before opening the door, gradually adding the handle and door movement as distractions. Wisconsin Humane Society also recommends indoor barriers or blocking access to exterior doors so the dog cannot reach the exit unsupervised while training is underway.

Use management while you improve the setup

Fence work and training take time. Wisconsin Humane Society recommends supervising dogs outdoors, redirecting them away from the fence with high-value treats, and using a long line as a backup. A long line should be used under supervision so it does not become tangled or create another hazard.

Wisconsin Humane Society advises against using an electric fence to reinforce the perimeter: a motivated dog may run through it and then receive another shock when trying to return. A temporary secondary barrier or supervised outdoor time is a safer interim measure than assuming an electric boundary will hold.

Address why your dog wants to leave

Some escapes are driven by opportunity; others are tied to unmet needs or distress. Austin Humane Society recommends exercise, play, training, and engaging toys for dogs that need more activity. If fear is the trigger, identify what frightens the dog, keep the dog indoors when unsupervised, and provide a safe place. A qualified trainer or behaviorist can help with gradual desensitization.

These steps do not replace a physical fix when the yard has an opening, but they can reduce the motivation to test it. Pair the fence change with indoor management or behavior support when the escape appears connected to fear or anxiety.

If coyotes are a local concern

Humane World for Animals advises against leaving small dogs outside unattended unless a coyote-resistant fence is present. Its guidance describes either a fence at least eight feet high made of material coyotes cannot climb, or a fence at least six feet high with a protective top device such as a roller. It also recommends a buried extension or mesh apron to address digging. These are coyote-protection recommendations in that guide, not a guarantee that a particular dog cannot escape.

How to choose among the options

  • Match the fix to the route: climbing, digging, chewing, gate opening, and door bolting call for different interventions.
  • Check compatibility: consider the existing fence material, span, gate hardware, and whether the structure can safely accept a roller, mesh, or extension.
  • Plan for coverage: decide how the dog will be supervised or contained while work is underway and whether a temporary barrier or long line is appropriate.
  • Review installation and safety: account for attachments, exposed edges, property layout, and local construction rules. The cited organizations offer general behavior guidance, not a site-specific engineering or code review.
  • Include motivation: when activity, fear, or anxiety contributes to escape attempts, combine physical changes with enrichment, indoor management, or professional behavior help.

The cited practical guidance does not provide comparable prices, controlled brand tests, measured success rates, or a numerical effectiveness ranking. Treat these as route-specific options to assess for your dog and yard, not as products with proven comparative performance.
