Yes. Guinea pigs can eat fresh mint as an occasional part of varied greens. The Royal Veterinary College lists mint among plants safe for guinea pigs, and SPCA New Zealand lists spearmint. Neither gives a mint-specific serving size, so start with a small amount rather than treating mint as a daily staple.
How much mint can a guinea pig eat?
No official mint-specific serving or frequency is established by the sources cited here. The Royal Veterinary College says vegetables, weeds and herbs make up about 10–15% of the diet overall, but that figure is for the whole category—not mint alone. Do not use it to calculate a mint portion.
A veterinarian-reviewed PangoVet article suggests 3–5 leaves a couple of times weekly. That is one secondary recommendation, not an official consensus or a dose established by a mint-feeding study. If you choose to offer mint, begin with a small amount and keep it occasional.
How to offer mint safely
- Choose fresh leaves. The safe-food guidance names mint or spearmint; it does not establish a separate dose for different varieties. A veterinarian-reviewed article also discusses peppermint, but that is secondary guidance.
- Rinse the leaves before serving to remove dirt and residue.
- Introduce mint gradually. Sudden diet changes can lead a guinea pig to refuse food, so add new foods cautiously.
- Watch your guinea pig’s response. If you notice a change in eating or droppings after introducing mint, stop offering it and contact a veterinarian if the concern persists.
Mint should not replace the essentials
Mint is a small optional part of the fresh-food mix, not a substitute for the foods that form the diet. VCA Animal Hospitals recommends unlimited timothy or other low-calcium hay, a smaller amount of high-fiber timothy-based guinea-pig pellets, and varied fresh leafy greens and vegetables. Hay provides fiber and helps wear down continuously growing teeth.

The Merck Veterinary Manual describes general feeding context as constant hay, approximately 1–2 teaspoons of commercial guinea-pig pellets, and 1–2 cups of fresh produce daily, with produce focused on vitamin-C-rich foods. Those are general figures, not a mint allowance.
Mint is not a vitamin C treatment
Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C, so their diet must provide it. VCA gives a general daily need of 10–50 mg depending on factors such as age, health, stress and pregnancy, and advises discussing an individual animal’s needs with a veterinarian. The sources cited here do not establish mint as a reliable way to meet that need.
