Yes—guinea pigs can eat carrots, but offer them only in small amounts as an occasional treat. Carrot should not displace the hay or grass, suitable pellets and varied fresh vegetables that make up a balanced guinea-pig diet.

How much carrot can a guinea pig eat?

Offer a small piece rather than making carrot a regular part of every meal. The RSPCA says small pieces can be given a few times a week and classifies root vegetables such as carrots as small-amount treats (RSPCA feeding guidance; RSPCA diet care document, 2023). These sources do not specify a universal weight or slice count, so there is no evidence-based carrot serving size that applies to every guinea pig.

Can guinea pigs eat carrots every day?

Carrot is not a daily staple. Keep it occasional and make the daily fresh-food selection varied. PDSA recommends one cup of fresh vegetables, greens and foraged foods per guinea pig each day, with several different types; that is the total fresh-food amount, not a carrot portion (PDSA diet guidance).

What should a guinea pig’s diet be based on?

Hay and grass should be available constantly and form the foundation of the diet. PDSA estimates they should make up 85–90% of it. The rest is a considered mix of appropriate pellets and varied fresh foods, rather than extra carrot.

  • Pellets: Choose suitable guinea-pig pellets. PDSA recommends one tablespoon of grass-based pellets per adult guinea pig daily; individual needs can differ.
  • Fresh foods: Offer variety, including some foods high in vitamin C. Guinea pigs cannot make vitamin C themselves.

VCA lists carrot among suitable vegetables and recommends unlimited timothy or other low-calcium hay, a smaller amount of commercial high-fiber timothy-based guinea-pig pellets, and varied vegetables and leafy greens (VCA Animal Hospitals feeding guidance). VCA gives a general vitamin C requirement of 10–50 mg daily, depending on factors such as age, health, stress and pregnancy; that figure is not a carrot dose. Ask a veterinarian about an individual animal’s diet or vitamin C needs.

Are carrots good for guinea pigs?

Carrots are an acceptable treat, not a complete food or a substitute for the foods that support a balanced diet. The cited guidance lists carrot as suitable or treat-appropriate, but does not establish a carrot-specific serving, sugar threshold or quantified health benefit. Keep the distinction clear: hay and grass are the foundation, varied fresh foods contribute to the overall diet, and carrot is an occasional addition.

How to introduce carrot safely

  1. Wash the fresh carrot before offering it.
  2. Start with a small piece, especially if your guinea pig has not eaten it before. Introduce new foods gradually rather than changing the diet suddenly.
  3. Watch appetite, drinking and droppings. Contact a veterinarian promptly if eating, drinking or toileting habits change.

Guinea pigs with health problems or special dietary needs may need individual guidance from a veterinarian.
