Yes. Guinea pigs can eat broccoli, but offer it only in small amounts a few times a week. Broccoli may cause gas, so introduce it gradually and keep it as an occasional treat—not a substitute for hay or a major part of the diet.
How much broccoli can a guinea pig eat?
The RSPCA advises that broccoli can be given in “small amounts a few times a week” as a treat. It does not specify a serving weight or volume, so there is no supported universal portion size to measure out. Start with a little, rather than giving a large amount at once.
Broccoli can cause gas, according to the RSPCA’s Christmas pet-safety guidance. That is a possible effect, not a certainty, but it is a reason to keep servings small and infrequent.
How to introduce broccoli safely
- Wash it well. VCA recommends offering fresh, well-washed vegetables. See its guinea-pig feeding guidance.
- Offer a small amount. Treat broccoli as an occasional addition, following the RSPCA’s small-amount guidance rather than making it a daily staple.
- Introduce it gradually. Sudden diet changes can lead to food refusal, and both VCA and the RSPCA advise against abrupt changes. Avoid adding several unfamiliar foods at once.
- Watch your guinea pig. Keep an eye on eating, drinking, and droppings after introducing a food. Contact a veterinarian promptly if any of these habits change, as the RSPCA advises.
Broccoli belongs behind hay in the diet
Broccoli should not displace the foods that form the foundation of a guinea pig’s diet. VCA’s guinea-pig care overview recommends good-quality grass hay as 75% of daily intake. The RSPCA says good-quality hay should be available at all times. Vegetables and greens fit into the remainder; a treat does not replace that foundation.

Broccoli provides vitamin C, but is not a complete solution
Guinea pigs cannot make their own vitamin C and need dietary sources. VCA includes broccoli among vegetables that provide vitamin C, alongside foods such as bell peppers, cauliflower, and parsley. That does not establish that broccoli alone meets an individual guinea pig’s needs. Ask a veterinarian about supplementation for your pet; VCA cautions against adding vitamin C to drinking water because it can affect the water’s taste and the vitamin degrades in water. See VCA’s guinea-pig health guidance.

The available guidance does not set an exact broccoli serving size, compare florets with stems or leaves, or specify whether broccoli must be raw or may be cooked. It also does not provide a comprehensive list of health conditions that rule broccoli out. If your guinea pig has digestive problems or another health condition, ask your veterinarian for advice tailored to that animal.
