How to Safely Introduce a New Greyhound to Other Dogs at Home

Introduce a new greyhound to resident dogs gradually: start with a neutral parallel walk, keep home sessions brief and supervised, and separate them when you cannot watch.

Start by asking the greyhound’s homing organization to help assess the match. If the dogs have not already met under supervision, introduce them on neutral ground with separate handlers, beginning at a distance and walking in parallel. At home, remove food and valued items, keep early contact brief and supervised, and separate the dogs whenever nobody can watch them directly. Let their behavior—not a preset timetable—determine how quickly you proceed.

Before the greyhound comes home

Ask about the individual dog

Talk with the greyhound’s homing organization about the dog’s history and suitability for living with your resident dog. Ask how it assesses compatibility and what it recommends for the first meeting. Greyhound Trust says local volunteers may suggest bringing a resident dog to meet potential matches; arrangements vary by organization and branch. Its guidance that many greyhounds live with other breeds is not a guarantee about any particular pairing. Greyhound Trust

Greyhounds are sighthounds with an instinct to chase, but breed context alone cannot predict how one dog will behave around another. Ask the organization about the individual greyhound, and raise any history of aggression, injury, or serious guarding before arranging contact.

Prepare separate spaces and handlers

Set up separate resting and eating areas before the first home session. Put away food bowls, chews, toys, and other items either dog may value. A sturdy gate or other suitable barrier can help maintain separation, but it is a management aid—not a substitute for supervision. Arrange for two capable handlers for the outdoor meeting.

How to conduct the first meeting

Start with a parallel walk

  1. Choose neutral outdoor ground, rather than either dog’s home or a place one routinely guards. Have one handler hold each dog on leash.
  2. Walk in the same direction with enough space between the dogs for both to remain calm. Seattle Humane suggests about 10 feet as an initial separation; treat that as a starting suggestion, not a rule for every pair. Seattle Humane
  3. If both dogs appear relaxed, gradually reduce the distance. Reward calm, friendly behavior, and keep leashes loose where it is safe to do so. Do not pull the dogs toward one another.
  4. Allow only brief greetings when both dogs are comfortable, then keep walking so either can disengage. End the meeting or add distance if either dog becomes worried, overexcited, or unable to settle.

RSPCA Australia also recommends a neutral outdoor introduction with the dogs leashed and held by different people. The pace and distance should follow the dogs’ responses; a calm meeting is a useful first step, not proof that they are compatible in every setting. RSPCA Australia

If you have more than one resident dog

Introduce the greyhound to resident dogs one at a time rather than starting with the whole group. This is a prudent way to keep the meeting manageable; the guidance cited here does not set out a greyhound-specific protocol for multi-dog households.

How to manage the first sessions at home

Begin in an open, low-conflict area

After a calm outdoor meeting, bring the dogs into an open area that is relatively neutral to the resident dog—not the usual feeding or sleeping spot. Remove food, chews, toys, and other obvious resources before they enter. Keep the first home sessions short and directly supervised. RSPCA Australia and Seattle Humane both advise managing valued items and starting home contact carefully. RSPCA Australia; Seattle Humane

Separate them whenever you cannot supervise

Use separate rooms or a suitable barrier whenever an adult cannot directly supervise the dogs. Maintain separate spaces for meals and rest. Continue calm parallel walks and brief shared sessions, increasing access only when the dogs’ behavior supports it. Separation is part of a careful introduction, not evidence that it has failed.

There is no universal number of days for keeping dogs apart or for granting full access to the home. The reviewed guidance does not establish a fixed timetable; allow the dogs’ comfort and the homing organization’s advice to set the pace.

When to pause or get help

If either dog appears uncomfortable or overwhelmed, do not push through the interaction. Increase distance, separate them, and try an easier step later. Avoid punishing communication such as growling; create space and reassess instead. These are reasons to slow down, not a complete checklist for interpreting canine body language.

Greyhound muzzles: follow individual guidance

Greyhound Trust recommends that owners keep a greyhound muzzled when out and about until they are confident about its behavior around other breeds. That is general guidance from the organization, not a dog-to-dog introduction protocol. Ask the homing organization whether and how to use the individual dog’s fitted muzzle for a particular meeting. A muzzle does not make an unsafe interaction safe and does not replace distance, competent handling, or supervision. Greyhound Trust also says its own service supplies adopters with a collar, lead, and muzzle; that should not be assumed of every organization. Greyhound Trust
