What Health Checks to Ask for When Adopting a Retired Racing Greyhound

Request the individual dog’s veterinary records, then ask a veterinarian to tailor the first health check and any tests to the greyhound’s history.

Ask for the dog’s veterinary and intake records, then arrange a prompt examination with a veterinarian who will review the greyhound’s history. Before repeating tests, find out what the adoption group has already checked or treated. The veterinarian can use that record and an individual exam to decide whether fecal testing, heartworm or other parasite checks, blood or urine tests, dental follow-up, or additional diagnostics are appropriate.

What to ask the adoption group before bringing your greyhound home

Request the full intake examination and veterinary records for the individual dog. Adoption programs differ in what they provide, so a group’s general description of its care is not proof that a particular test or treatment was completed for your dog.

  • Vaccinations: Which vaccines were given, on what dates, and when are any boosters due?
  • Heartworm: Was the dog tested? Ask for the result and date, plus the prevention history and any upcoming dose.
  • Fecal and parasite care: Were fecal or other parasite tests performed? What treatments were given, and is follow-up due?
  • Dental care: Was the dog’s mouth examined or teeth cleaned? Were teeth extracted, and were follow-up instructions provided?
  • Medical history: Ask about injuries, lameness, skin problems, medications, and known ongoing conditions.
  • Record continuity: Find out which veterinarian or clinic holds the records and whether the adoption group can help your new vet with questions.

For context, SEGA describes veterinary examinations, vaccinations, heartworm testing and prevention, and teeth cleaning as needed in its adoption preparation. FHGA lists heartworm testing, vaccinations, fecal testing and treatment, parasite screening, and dental cleaning or extractions if needed; it notes that monthly preventatives and prescription medications during its care are excluded. GEM says preparation can include a physical, dental work as needed, vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and worming if needed, and that available intake and veterinary information is provided. These are descriptions of each organization’s program, not guarantees about another group or an individual dog.

When to schedule the first veterinary visit

Book a visit promptly after adoption and bring the adoption packet. Greyhound Supporters’ handbook, last updated March 5, 2025, tells adopters to establish veterinary follow-up within 30 days. Its checklist labels a health check and fecal sample essential, and CBC (complete blood count) and urinalysis recommended. Those are that organization’s instructions—not a universal testing rule for every newly adopted greyhound.

Ask the veterinarian whether a fecal sample is appropriate now, whether heartworm or other parasite testing is due, and whether the vaccination record is complete for this dog’s circumstances. The vet can decide whether CBC, urinalysis, imaging, or other tests are warranted based on the dog’s history and examination. A test is most useful when there is a specific question it can answer and a result could affect care.

What the veterinarian should review

Ask for an individualized examination rather than assuming a standard panel will fit every dog. Discuss the following areas and share any concerns you have observed:

  • General condition: weight and body condition, eyes, ears, nose, and overall physical findings.
  • Mouth: current dental condition, prior cleaning or extractions, and any recommended follow-up.
  • Movement: gait, feet and nails, joints, and any history of injury or lameness.
  • Skin: visible problems and whether any need further assessment.
  • Prevention and medication: what parasite prevention is suitable given the dog’s history and location, and how any existing medication should be continued or changed.

The Irish Retired Greyhound Trust’s veterinary-led educational series discusses visible areas such as gait, skin, feet, weight, and joints, including signs that merit a call to a veterinarian. Use these as topics to raise, not as a diagnostic checklist for deciding that a dog is healthy or ill.

How to discuss heartworm and other parasites

First establish what was tested, when, and what treatment or prevention the dog received. Then ask the veterinarian what remains due. Greyhound Supporters’ handbook discusses heartworm, intestinal parasites, fleas, and ticks in its follow-up guidance and says parasite medication should be veterinarian-prescribed. The appropriate testing and prevention plan depends on the individual dog’s records and location; do not assume a test or dose is current just because an adoption group generally provides parasite care.

How to choose a veterinarian and evaluate proposed tests

Look for a veterinarian willing to review the dog’s racing and adoption history and explain how that history affects care. Greyhound experience can be useful; if the clinic needs additional input, ask whether it can consult a greyhound-experienced veterinarian. For each proposed test, ask what question it answers, what in the dog’s record or examination makes it relevant, how urgent it is, and what may change depending on the result. The available guidance does not rank clinics or prescribe one screening panel for all greyhounds.

Discuss the dog’s available injury, medication, travel, and racing history before any medication, sedation, or anesthesia. A 2019 adopter manual raises breed-specific drug and anesthesia considerations, but it is dated and should be treated as a prompt for a current, case-specific conversation—not as a dosing guide. The publisher’s current description of Adopting the Racing Greyhound also identifies anesthesia protocols as a topic, but a book cannot replace the veterinarian’s assessment of this dog.

What is universal—and what is not

The sources do not establish a single authoritative screening panel that applies to every retired racing greyhound, country, or clinical history. Adoption organizations describe different pre-adoption services, and a dog’s actual records determine what has been done. Use those records, the veterinarian’s examination, and the dog’s circumstances to decide which checks are needed rather than repeating every test or assuming no follow-up is necessary.
