Potbellied pigs are intelligent, social, and curious. They usually do best with calm, positive interaction, patient training, and safe opportunities to root and forage—not with expectations that they behave like dogs or cats. Let a pig choose to approach, avoid forcing restraint, and seek a pig-experienced veterinarian if aggression persists, causes injury, or appears alongside a sudden change or signs of distress.
What is normal behavior for a pet potbellied pig?
Pigs are social and exploratory. Rooting, digging, sniffing, and foraging are ordinary ways to investigate their surroundings, not automatically signs of misbehavior. A veterinary review of miniature pet pig behavior notes that behaviors people consider problems may reflect normal swine behavior, especially when the pig lacks appropriate outlets. Destructive or aggressive behavior can emerge when those needs are not properly directed. Veterinary Partner’s review of miniature pet pig behavior discusses these issues.
Understanding the behavior helps you respond constructively: protect areas you do not want dug up, while giving the pig suitable places and materials to explore. Do not assume that rooting or nudging is a disorder based on the behavior alone; consider the circumstances and whether the pig has safe outlets.
How do you socialize a potbellied pig?
Let the pig approach
Build trust with quiet, predictable interactions. Sit near the pig and allow it to approach rather than cornering, chasing, or grabbing it. The Pot-Bellied Pig Manual excerpt on Veterinary Partner, written by Lisle George, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, describes pigs as preferring to initiate contact. Young pigs’ sociality with people is associated with nurturing human contact in their first weeks of life, but that guidance does not establish a universal timetable for socializing every pig.

Make interaction positive and consistent
Use calm handling and reward behaviors you want to encourage. Treats can help with training, but manage food carefully so that excitement around feeding does not become difficult or unsafe behavior. Move at the individual pig’s pace; a pig that backs away needs space, not more pressure.
Why does a pet pig root, dig, or forage?
Rooting and foraging are normal behavioral needs. Provide safe, suitable materials or a designated rooting area, and supervise the pig’s access so the activity does not create hazards or damage places it should not. A rooting box may help redirect indoor rooting, but it does not replace appropriate space or opportunities to explore. The Lafeber veterinary handout on potbellied pigs discusses outdoor exploration and rooting areas.

Broader pig-welfare guidance supports providing environmental complexity and manipulable materials for exploration, foraging, rooting, chewing, and social interaction. WOAH’s 2024 welfare chapter addresses commercial domestic pig production systems, not household pet requirements; its principles offer context rather than a pet-specific rule. It recommends an environment that fosters normal behavior and reduces abnormal behavior. WOAH’s 2024 pig welfare chapter provides the full guidance.
Can potbellied pigs be trained?
Yes. Pet pigs can learn skills such as house training and harness training, according to the Lafeber handout. Training is different from restraint: pigs may strongly resist being picked up or held, and even light restraint can provoke a flight response, struggling, or squealing. Do not force a harness or handling exercise. Introduce it gradually and let the pig participate voluntarily.

A properly fitted harness may help with gradual harness training or transport. Choose equipment suited to the individual pig and use it without forcing contact; the mini pig harness guidance covers harnesses. Check fit and the pig’s response rather than assuming a harness is safe simply because it is labeled for pigs.
How should you respond to aggression or signs of distress?
Consider the context when a pig behaves aggressively toward a person, another pet, or another pig. The available miniature-pig behavior review identifies these as relevant concerns but does not provide a detailed diagnostic protocol. A change in the pig’s environment, social situation, or health may matter, so do not treat a broad behavior label as a diagnosis.

Review safety and the environment, and contact a veterinarian experienced with pigs if aggression is persistent, injurious, or accompanied by distress or a sudden behavioral change. Broader welfare guidance identifies increased conflict behavior, unusual vocalizing, escape attempts, immobility, and changes in eating, drinking, posture, or movement as possible welfare or health indicators. These are prompts to seek assessment, not a way to diagnose a pet at home.
The UK government’s pig welfare code advises monitoring aggression and separating persistent aggressors or victims when group aggression becomes serious. That code concerns pig welfare beyond household pets; for pets, prioritize immediate safety and get advice from a qualified veterinarian before applying group-management measures. The UK government code on caring for pigs describes its broader guidance.

What enrichment should you choose?
Choose enrichment by whether it safely suits your pig and allows exploration, rooting, or foraging without forced handling. Consider the pig’s size and habits, the material’s durability, and whether you can supervise use. A rooting box can redirect digging; a harness has a different purpose and should be introduced gradually. Neither is a substitute for appropriate space, and no single item meets every pig’s needs.
Identify a veterinarian experienced with pigs before an urgent problem arises. Veterinary reviews and care guidance can also help owners understand normal behavior and practical care, but a veterinarian should assess persistent aggression, injury, distress, or abrupt changes.
