Before letting a pet bird out of its cage, secure the room: close windows and exterior doors, switch off ceiling fans, make glass visible or inaccessible, remove anything the bird could chew or swallow, and keep it away from cooking, smoke, sprays, cleaners, and repair fumes. Stay with the bird throughout its flight time. A prepared room lowers risk, but it cannot be treated as hazard-free once people, pets, or activities change the space.
Prepare the room before opening the cage
Choose a room where you can watch the bird continuously. Do this quick check each time; a room that was safe earlier may not be safe after someone opens a door, starts cooking, or brings in a cleaner.
- Close escape routes. Shut exterior windows and doors. Let everyone in the household know the bird is out so no one opens them unexpectedly.
- Stop moving blades. Turn off ceiling fans in the flight area before the bird comes out. Do not rely on the bird to avoid a fan.
- Manage glass and mirrors. Birds may collide with windows and mirrors. Cover mirrors or keep the bird away from them, and make windows visibly distinct from open flight space. Visible markers can be one aid, but no marker should be treated as a guarantee against collisions. The MSD Veterinary Manual identifies glass as a household injury hazard; PetMD also advises covering mirrors.
- Put away chewable or swallowable items. Remove medication, food, cleaners, personal-care products, jewelry, and small objects from reach. Secure electrical cords and blind cords. Check accessible furniture, blinds, toys, and zippers for parts the bird could chew, swallow, or become entangled in.
- Keep the bird away from fumes and flames. Keep it out of the kitchen while cooking and away from open flames, smoke, sprays, cleaning products, and home-repair or painting work.
Prevent exposure to fumes and household toxins
Birds can be harmed by airborne hazards as well as by swallowing or chewing something dangerous. Veterinary resources warn about fumes from overheated nonstick cookware and other sources, including cleaners, air fresheners, smoke, and repair products. Do not use smell as a safety test: the absence of a noticeable odor does not establish that the air is safe for a bird.
Keep birds out of the kitchen while cooking, especially when cookware may overheat, and out of rooms where cleaning, spraying, painting, or repairs are underway. The MSD Veterinary Manual, Association of Avian Veterinarians, Oregon Veterinary Medical Association, and University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine discuss household fume and toxin risks.

Prevent access to suspect foods, plants, cleaners, personal-care products, and metals. Examples identified by veterinary sources include avocado, certain plants, lead, and zinc; this is not a complete list for every bird or situation. The risk depends on the substance, the route and amount of exposure, and the bird. For a specific item, consult an avian veterinarian rather than assuming it is safe because it is absent from a short hazard list.
Supervise flight and reset the room after activities
Remain present and watch where the bird lands and what it investigates or chews. If cooking, cleaning, maintenance, or another activity introduces a new hazard, stop and reassess the space before allowing flight again. Keep cords and blind cords inaccessible, and do not leave the bird out while you are unable to observe it.

What to do after a suspected exposure
If the bird may have contacted or swallowed a toxin, move it away from the exposure and contact an avian veterinarian promptly. Do the same if it appears unwell after a possible exposure. Household hazards differ, so there is no single home-treatment step that is appropriate for every substance; seek professional guidance rather than waiting for symptoms to worsen.
