If someone you care about has lost a dog, a simple, sincere message is enough: acknowledge the loss, recognize what the dog meant to them, and offer to be there without pressure. You do not need to find a perfect phrase. As veterinarian Seth Schwartz puts it, “You don’t need the perfect words.”

Short texts for someone who lost a dog

For a text, keep it brief and warm. Use the dog’s name if you know it, and make clear that the person does not have to respond.

  • “I’m so sorry about [name]. I know how much they meant to you, and I’m here if you want to talk.”
  • “There’s no need to reply. I’m thinking of you and remembering [name].”
  • “I’m so sorry you’re missing [name]. I’m sending you love today.”
  • “I’m thinking of you. Would it help if I brought dinner by or took care of an errand this week?”

PetMD’s Seth Schwartz, DVM, a veterinarian who specializes in end-of-life decisions for pet parents, emphasizes that there is no need for perfect wording: PetMD’s guide to what to say after a pet dies offers practical examples.

What to write in a sympathy card

A card gives you room to recognize the relationship or share a memory. Choose only details you know to be true; a sincere acknowledgment is better than a made-up or overfamiliar sentiment.

The RSPCA’s suggested wording is short and direct: “I’m so sorry for your loss. [Pet’s name] was lucky to have you.” Its advice is to keep the message simple and personal where appropriate: RSPCA guidance on supporting someone through pet bereavement.

What to say in person or to a colleague

In a conversation, acknowledge the loss and follow the bereaved person’s lead. They may want to talk about their dog, sit quietly, or change the subject. You can offer company without asking them to explain what happened.

Offer practical help in a specific, low-pressure way—such as bringing a meal or handling an errand—instead of asking a broad question that leaves the person to plan the support. LSU Veterinary Medicine recommends listening, checking in, sharing memories when welcome, and not trying to fix the person’s feelings: LSU Veterinary Medicine’s guidance on what to say and not say.

What not to say after someone loses a dog

Even well-meant reassurance can hurt if it minimizes the loss or tells someone how to grieve. Avoid phrases such as:

Do not assume the person shares your religious beliefs, set a timetable for grief, or ask about the circumstances of the death or euthanasia unless they choose to discuss them. PetMD, the RSPCA, and LSU Veterinary Medicine all caution against minimizing the loss or trying to prescribe how the person should feel.

How to keep supporting them after the first message

Grief support does not have to end with the first condolence. Check in again later with a brief message, listen if the person wants to talk, and let them decide whether they want company. Mentioning the dog by name or inviting the person to share a memory can show that you have not forgotten, but give them room to decline.

How to choose the right words

Match the message to your relationship and the format. A text can be one or two sentences; a card can include a specific memory; a spoken condolence can leave space for silence. Use spiritual language only when you know it fits the recipient. If you did not know the dog, do not invent a memory—recognize the person’s loss instead.
