Found a Kitten? What to Do Before You Act

Healthy kittens outdoors may have a mother nearby. Learn when to wait and watch, when to seek urgent help, and how local shelters can guide next steps.

If kittens outdoors look healthy and are not in immediate danger, watch from a distance and give their mother time to return. A mother cat may be nearby looking for food or waiting for people to leave, so her absence from view does not mean the kittens are abandoned. If they look sick or injured, are in immediate danger, or appear uncared for, contact a local veterinarian, shelter, or rescue for guidance—and call before bringing them in.

First, check whether the kittens need urgent help

Look for signs from a distance without crowding the nest. ASPCA advises prompt help from a shelter, rescue, or veterinarian if kittens appear ill or injured. Dirty or skinny kittens, or kittens crying excessively, may also need care; these are warning signs to ask for help about, not a diagnosis. Do not wait through an observation period if a kitten is hurt, seriously distressed, or in immediate danger.

If the location itself is unsafe, such as a place exposed to traffic or other immediate hazards, seek local guidance. Where feasible, move the kittens only to a safer nearby spot their mother can still find.

If they seem healthy and safe, watch from a distance

Keep back or observe from a concealed place. A mother may be away searching for food or may avoid returning while people are close. Best Friends Animal Society recommends checking back after a few hours, and Alley Cat Allies also advises waiting and watching from a hidden place. Conditions differ, so no single waiting period guarantees that a mother will return. Avoid hovering over the kittens while you monitor them.

What to do if the mother returns

If the mother comes back, cares for the kittens, and they appear well, continued monitoring may be appropriate. ASPCA suggests providing food and a dry, clean shelter for the mother and litter. A local shelter or rescue can advise on later fostering, adoption, or a trap-neuter-return-management (TNRM) plan, depending on the cats and local options.

What to do if she does not return or the kittens seem uncared for

Contact a local shelter, rescue, or veterinarian for advice if the mother does not return or the kittens show signs of poor care. Call ahead to confirm the organization is open and can accept them. If people need to care for the kittens, ask about a foster program and age-appropriate instructions rather than guessing at feeding or care.

Some shelters provide kitten milk replacer and feeding bottles to foster caregivers when kittens need human feeding. That is an orphan-care option to discuss with a shelter—not a reason to separate kittens from a mother who is present and caring for them.

Use age and behavior as clues, not automatic rules

Approximate age can help a local animal-welfare professional recommend next steps, but it should not be treated as a clinical rule. ASPCA describes kittens around two months old as often able to eat on their own and having good coordination. It also describes fostering kittens once they can eat wet food independently, around four to five weeks, and recommends discussing a TNRM plan for unsocialized kittens older than eight weeks. Ask a local shelter or community-cat program to assess the kittens and explain what applies where you live.

Check for an owner and follow local found-animal rules

Before rehoming a kitten, take reasonable steps to find out whether it belongs to someone. ASPCA recommends checking for an ID tag, asking a shelter, rescue, or veterinary clinic to scan for a microchip, posting neighborhood notices, and checking local requirements for reporting found animals. Rules and procedures vary by location.

Ask local organizations for practical help

If you cannot safely assess or foster the kittens, contact a nearby shelter or rescue and ask whether it has a kitten foster program and what it can accept. Local capacity and veterinary availability vary, so call first. For community cats or unsocialized older kittens, ask whether a local community-cat program can advise on assessment and TNRM options.
