Yes. Guinea pigs can eat celeriac as an occasional part of a varied fresh-vegetable diet. Peel and wash the root, then cut it into small chunks. Introduce it gradually and watch your guinea pig’s appetite and droppings. Celeriac is not a substitute for hay, a balanced diet, or a reliable source of vitamin C.

How to prepare celeriac for a guinea pig

  1. Peel the root. Remove the tough outer skin.
  2. Wash it. Rinse the peeled celeriac before serving.
  3. Cut it into small chunks. Offer a small piece that is easy for your guinea pig to handle, rather than a large piece.
  4. Introduce it gradually. When offering any unfamiliar food, start cautiously and observe your guinea pig’s response.

These preparation steps come from Guinea Piggles’ celeriac guide. The German Animal Welfare Federation’s food guidance also lists celeriac as suitable.

How often can guinea pigs eat celeriac?

Serve it in moderation, as one vegetable among several, rather than as a staple. Guinea Piggles suggests small chunks a few times per week, but that is a specialist guide’s practical suggestion—not a veterinary-established universal schedule. The German Animal Welfare Federation lists celeriac without specifying a portion or frequency, and the veterinary sources cited here do not establish a celeriac-specific amount.

Do not use guidance for celery stalks as proof of how often to feed celeriac. The RSPCA lists celery among vegetables guinea pigs can eat often, but that general diet guidance does not establish the same frequency for celery root.

What to watch for when adding it

Monitor whether your guinea pig keeps eating and drinking normally and whether its droppings remain typical. The RSPCA recommends monitoring food, water, and droppings as part of guinea pig care. If a change in diet is followed by an ongoing change in appetite or droppings, stop offering the new food and contact a veterinarian for advice.

If your guinea pig has a known urinary, digestive, or other health condition, ask a veterinarian before changing its diet. General food lists do not establish what is appropriate for an individual animal with a medical condition.

Celeriac is not a vitamin C plan

Guinea pigs need vitamin C in their diet. The MSD Veterinary Manual’s 2025 guidance gives minimum daily requirements of 10 mg/kg of body weight for most guinea pigs and 30 mg/kg for pregnant females. These are vitamin C requirements, not amounts of celeriac to feed. The Manual recommends guinea pig-specific vitamin C-fortified pellets and vitamin C-rich produce as part of prevention.

Vitamin C in pellets can break down with exposure to heat, light, and moisture, according to VCA’s guinea pig feeding guidance. VCA also advises against adding vitamin C to drinking water: it can alter the water’s taste and the vitamin degrades rapidly. Celeriac can add variety, but it should not be relied on to meet your guinea pig’s vitamin C needs.
