Clean feet, suitable footing, balanced nutrition, and prompt veterinary attention for pain or abnormal changes all help protect hoof health. No single trimming schedule or shoeing choice suits every horse.
How do you clean and check a horse’s hooves?
Pick out and inspect each hoof every day. As the Merck Veterinary Manual puts it, “Daily hoof care is essential. Pick out dirt from the hooves, and check them for any problems.” A hoof pick helps remove debris so you can see the foot; it is a cleaning tool, not a way to diagnose or treat disease. The British Horse Society also recommends daily hoof picking.
- Remove dirt and packed debris, including from the grooves beside the frog.
- Look for cracks, splits, unusual odor, tenderness, or other changes.
- If the horse wears shoes, check whether any shoe appears loose, shifted, or excessively worn.
Regular checks make changes easier to notice. If a hoof looks abnormal or the horse is uncomfortable, contact your farrier or veterinarian rather than trying to diagnose the problem yourself.
How often should you trim a horse’s hooves?
There is no single interval for every horse. Published guidance offers useful starting points, but the right schedule depends on the individual horse, its hoof growth and condition, workload, season, and environment. Ask the horse’s farrier to set and adjust the interval.

| Source | Published interval or guidance | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Merck Veterinary Manual | Typically every 4–8 weeks | General horse-owner hoof-care guidance; the interval is typical, not universal. |
| UF/IFAS Extension | Every 5–8 weeks for most horses in its guidance | Florida-specific care guidance. |
| University of Minnesota Extension | 6–8 weeks in summer; 6–12 weeks in winter | Seasonal examples; individual needs can differ. |
| UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine | Discusses studies favoring 5–6 weeks for balance, especially for horses in work | Emphasizes that cycles vary and the farrier should help set the schedule. |
These recommendations are not a pooled statistic. Use them as context for a conversation with your farrier, who can assess how quickly the feet grow and wear and whether the current trim remains appropriate.
Does your horse need shoes?
Some horses benefit from shoes; others may do well barefoot. Shoes can protect hooves and improve grip on certain surfaces, but the decision depends on the horse’s hoof health, work and workload, footing, wear relative to growth, and medical history. Have your farrier and veterinarian advise on the individual horse rather than assuming that all horses need shoes—or that barefoot care is always sufficient.

What hoof changes should prompt a call?
Odor, visible changes, or pain deserve attention, but a sign alone does not establish a diagnosis. Contact a veterinarian and farrier when you notice a concerning change or the horse is sore.
- Strong odor while cleaning: UF/IFAS identifies this as a clue that may be associated with thrush.
- A widened, softer, chalky junction between the sole and wall: UF/IFAS describes this as a possible sign of white line disease.
- Possible laminitis signs or hoof-related pain: Merck advises owners to learn the initial signs of laminitis so treatment and dietary prevention can begin promptly. Seek veterinary advice quickly if you are concerned.
- Cracks, splits, or a loose or worn shoe: Flag the issue to your farrier; involve a veterinarian if the horse is painful or unwell.
Do not try to confirm or treat thrush, white line disease, or laminitis from appearance alone. A veterinarian can assess the horse, and the farrier can advise on hoof care.

How do environment and nutrition affect hoof care?
Keep the horse’s surroundings clean and dry where practical, and provide a balanced diet. UF/IFAS notes that both nutrient deficiencies and excesses can affect hoof structures. A supplement is not an automatic solution: it may help in some cases, but it should fit the rest of the ration. Discuss supplementation with an equine nutrition specialist. Because new hoof grows from the coronary band, visible effects may take several months.
