Give your cat constant access to fresh water, shade and a cool place to rest. When extreme heat is expected, keep the cat indoors in air conditioning if possible. Watch for heatstroke signs such as excessive panting, weakness, drooling, vomiting or confusion; if any appear, start gentle cooling and contact a veterinarian immediately.
Make a cool, safe place to rest
For indoor comfort, close blinds or curtains during the day to limit direct sun, and use a fan to keep air moving. Set up a shaded resting spot away from hot windows and surfaces. A cooling mat can be an optional comfort; Cornell also suggests placing ice packs beneath blankets so the cat can choose whether to rest nearby. These aids do not replace water, shade or a cool indoor refuge.
If your cat goes outdoors, provide fresh water there as well as indoors, and make dependable shade available. Trees, umbrellas and sun sails are practical options. Keep cats off hot asphalt, wood and artificial turf, and plan any outdoor time for cooler morning or evening hours. Never leave a cat in a parked car, even in shade or with the windows cracked.
During extreme heat, bring outdoor cats inside if possible. Check sheds, garages, greenhouses, barns and other outbuildings so a cat cannot be shut inside without a way out of the heat.

Encourage drinking without relying on a gadget
Keep fresh water accessible at all times. Hydration supports temperature regulation, and dehydration can make it harder for a cat to control body temperature. Some cats may drink more from a running water source, such as a fountain, but it is an optional aid—not a replacement for readily available fresh water.
Wet food or adding water to food can also increase water intake. Ask your veterinarian before changing your cat’s diet if there are individual health or dietary concerns.

Know the signs of heatstroke
Heatstroke can become life-threatening quickly. Warning signs include:
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Weakness, unusual drowsiness or collapse
- Confusion
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Gums that look abnormal in color or feel dry or sticky
Do not wait to see whether these signs pass. Contact a veterinarian or emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

What to do if your cat may be overheating
- Move the cat out of the heat. Take the cat to a cool area with airflow.
- Begin gentle cooling while arranging veterinary care. Gently wet the fur with cool—not very cold—water. Room-temperature wet towels can be placed at the neck, armpits and groin; rewet them every few minutes. Use a fan if one is available.
- Call a veterinarian immediately. Follow the clinic’s instructions and arrange urgent care. Do not put the cat in a tub of cool or cold water.
Protect light-colored cats from sun exposure
Cornell advises applying pet-safe sunscreen to the ear tips and nose of cats with light-colored fur. Ask your veterinarian to help choose an appropriate product; the guidance does not establish a particular brand or formulation.
