Cats are drawn to Christmas trees because they bring something new into familiar territory: a climbable structure, a high perch, lights, scents and dangling decorations. Those same features can put a curious cat at risk. Anchor the tree, remove tinsel, block access to water and electrical cords, and keep fragile or swallowable decorations out of reach.
Why are cats attracted to Christmas trees?
A tree changes the home environment and gives a cat several things to investigate at once. Cornell’s Feline Health Center describes holiday changes as novel and interesting stimuli, and notes that a tree can offer a climbing cat an indoor version of the outdoors. Cats Protection also points to climbing, lights and sparkly decorations as potential attractions.
These are plausible reasons, not a ranked list of motives measured in cats. Not every cat will be interested, but climbing, batting at dangling objects or investigating unfamiliar smells can make a tree especially tempting.
How to set up a safer Christmas tree
Secure the tree so it cannot tip
Cats may climb a tree or leap into it. Use a sturdy stand and anchor the tree securely with a method suited to the tree and room. Positioning it away from furniture or other launch points may help, but placement alone does not make an unsecured tree safe. Cornell and the ASPCA both recommend securing or anchoring it.

Skip tinsel and string-like decorations
Do not put tinsel on the tree. A cat may bat it around, carry it in its mouth or swallow it. The ASPCA warns: “Tinsel can lead to an obstructed digestive tract, severe vomiting, dehydration and possible surgery.” Keep other string-like decorations out of reach too.
Block access to tree water and clear fallen needles
Cover the real tree’s water reservoir so your cat cannot drink from it. The ASPCA says tree water can harbor bacteria and cause nausea, diarrhea or stomach upset. Cats Protection advises preventing cats from licking or nibbling real trees and promptly picking up fallen needles. Be mindful of oils and additives in the water; this does not mean every tree or additive is toxic.

Keep lights and cords beyond reach
Route light cords where your cat cannot chew them, and inspect them for damage. The ASPCA warns that wires can cause potentially lethal electric shock. If you cannot keep your cat away from the cords, unplug the lights when you are not supervising.

Is a real or artificial tree safer for cats?
Neither type is established as universally safer. A real tree adds potential exposure to needles, sap or oils, and water; an artificial tree avoids those particular exposures but can still tip over and still has lights, cords and ornaments. Choose based on your cat’s behavior and your ability to prevent access to hazards, rather than assuming either type is risk-free.
What if your cat keeps climbing or chewing the tree?
If your cat persistently climbs or chews despite safer setup, limit access to the room or use a smaller display that is less accessible. Remove the hazard rather than relying on a deterrent or product to guarantee safety. Keep the tree secured and continue to control access to cords, water and decorations.
