Before your rabbit explores a room, make sure cords, toxic plants, chemicals, unsafe gaps, and chewable surfaces are out of reach. Start with a prepared pen or rabbit-safe room, provide suitable things to chew and dig, then expand access gradually as you learn your rabbit’s habits. Supervision helps you spot problems, but it does not replace physical barriers—especially around electrical cords.
Start with the hazards that can hurt your rabbit
Secure cords and electrical equipment
Unplug or remove exposed cords from the rabbit’s area where possible. Route remaining cables out of reach or enclose them in suitable heavy-duty plastic cord protection, and block access to outlets, charging cables, and entertainment centers. House Rabbit Society describes bunny-proofing as “encasing electric cords in heavy-duty plastic, or blocking cords and outlets with furniture so the rabbit cannot reach them” in “Outdoor and Indoor Hazards,” by Holly O’Meara.
Do not rely on supervision alone: a rabbit can bite a cord quickly. Check cord covers and barriers periodically, and treat a damaged cover as a warning that the cord may still be reachable. A cover is not proof that a cable is chew-proof.
Remove toxic plants and secure hazardous materials
Identify the plants in every room your rabbit can enter and move poisonous plants completely out of reach. Keep pesticides, fertilizers, and other potentially hazardous substances secured; outdoor areas need the same attention. If you cannot confidently identify a plant or determine whether it is safe, ask a rabbit-savvy veterinarian or consult a reliable rabbit-specific plant reference rather than guessing. The care guidance cited here does not provide a complete plant-by-plant toxicology list.

Also put away books, magazines, remotes, plastic bags, and small objects that could be chewed or swallowed. A rabbit cannot be expected to recognize a dangerous object by taste or smell.
Block dangerous gaps and protect surfaces
Block access beneath couches, beds, and bookcases if cords, trapped spaces, or other hazards are there. Use secure guards or bumpers on exposed baseboards, wall corners, and furniture edges, and keep rabbits away from electronics they might reach or chew. Any protective material should be firmly fitted and checked for chewing or ingestion.

Carpet fibers and other synthetic materials can be dangerous if swallowed. House Rabbit Society warns that ingested carpet fibers may cause gastrointestinal obstruction. The safest approach is to prevent access to tempting fibers and offer an appropriate alternative, rather than assuming a floor covering is harmless because it is familiar.
Set up a safe home base
Prepare a pen or rabbit-safe room before your rabbit arrives. Include a hiding place, food and water bowls, a litter box, access to hay, toys, and comfortable flooring. A home base gives your rabbit a controlled place to settle while you identify hazards elsewhere; a small cage should not be treated as a complete long-term living arrangement.

House Rabbit Society’s “Tips for Bunny Proofing” recommends a minimum penned area of 16 square feet and daily opportunities for supervised exercise outside the pen. That is the organization’s guidance, not a universally established standard. Configure the pen to provide a safe area and enough room for the rabbit’s needs.
Choose safe, comfortable flooring
UC Davis advises against wire flooring; if it is the only available option, provide a solid surface the rabbit can retreat to. For a pen, House Rabbit Society suggests placing a protective layer beneath blankets. Keep flooring clean, comfortable, and in good condition, and watch for chewing or swallowed material.

Offer safe ways to chew, dig, and explore
Rabbit-proofing works best alongside outlets for natural behavior. Provide hay, suitable toys, cardboard, and appropriate untreated natural materials. House Rabbit Society also describes natural-material mats and designated digging areas as possible options. Check materials, coatings, and treatments: something sold for pets is not automatically safe, and toxic woods or treated or pesticide-exposed materials should be avoided.
When your rabbit targets something unsafe, block or hide the target and make an acceptable alternative easy to reach. Positive reinforcement can encourage the behavior you want; scolding is not a substitute for removing access to a hazard.

Expand access gradually and keep checking
- Prepare one controlled area. Secure cords, plants, chemicals, small objects, gaps, and vulnerable surfaces before letting your rabbit explore.
- Observe your rabbit in that space. Watch what attracts attention and whether barriers, floor coverings, or chew alternatives are being tested.
- Address what you discover. Strengthen or move barriers and remove any newly identified hazard before opening another area.
- Repeat as access grows. Recheck cords, plants, flooring, and protective materials when room arrangements change or your rabbit’s behavior changes.
Individual athletic ability and determination vary, so there is no single reliable jump height to plan around. Assume your rabbit may reach more than expected, especially in a newly explored space, and place hazards beyond reach or behind a secure barrier.
Choose barriers and supplies by the job they do
For a cord cover, pen, floor protector, or chew and digging material, focus on whether it actually prevents access, fits securely in the room, can be chewed or swallowed, and is practical to clean or replace. Do not assume a cord cover is chew-proof or a mat is safe without evidence about its material. These care recommendations do not establish brand rankings or comparative product performance; moving hazards out of reach remains the priority.
