Cats.com rates Pure Balance cat food 6.2 out of 10 (37/60, C+) in a review last updated January 12, 2026. The review credits its value and some favorable ingredient choices, but flags high carbohydrate levels in the dry recipes it assessed, ingredients that complicate one recipe’s limited-ingredient positioning, and carrageenan in the wet recipe reviewed. That score is Cats.com’s editorial judgment—not a lab test, feeding trial, or veterinary assessment. Read the Cats.com review.

What the reviewed recipes contain
The figures below are guaranteed-analysis values reported by Cats.com in its review last updated January 12, 2026. They describe the reviewed products, not the brand as a whole. Dry-matter carbohydrate figures are the review’s calculations and characterizations, not separate guarantees on the product label.

Chicken & Brown Rice dry food
Cats.com identifies chicken as the primary protein and notes chicken, chicken meal, and lamb meal at the top of the ingredient list. It also points to the recipe’s grains and legumes and describes its carbohydrate content as high. In the review’s assessment, animal-sourced fat and the absence of animal by-products are favorable features, while the plant-heavy profile and dry food’s lower moisture are concerns.
Walmart’s listing also identifies chicken as the first ingredient and describes added vitamins, minerals, and taurine. Its surfaced product page names the recipe as Pure Balance Dry Cat Food, Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe. Check Walmart’s listing for the current label, sizes, price, and availability.
Limited Ingredient Grain-Free Turkey & Sweet Potato dry food
“Limited ingredient” does not mean allergen-free. The reviewed formula includes turkey, but also chicken meal and fish meal, among other ingredients. Cats.com notes that chicken and fish are common allergens and considers their presence a drawback for a cat avoiding those proteins. This is an ingredient-based observation, not a diagnosis or a claim that the food will trigger a reaction in any individual cat.

Turkey & Sweet Potato Dinner wet food
The wet recipe contains turkey and turkey broth first, followed by sweet potato, egg product, and several gums; Cats.com specifically flags carrageenan and plant ingredients. The reviewer calls the recipe acceptable but not excellent and describes its carbohydrate level as high compared with other wet foods. Those are Cats.com’s conclusions about this particular formula, not a finding about every Pure Balance wet food.
What is known about manufacturing and sourcing
Cats.com reports that Walmart introduced Pure Balance in 2012. It says Ainsworth Pet Nutrition makes some varieties and unnamed partner manufacturers make others. The review could not establish the other manufacturers’ locations or clarify ingredient sourcing. That leaves important details unresolved; it does not establish that all recipes come from one manufacturer or one location.

Recall history: what the review does and does not establish
Cats.com says it does not appear that Pure Balance food has ever been recalled. Treat that as the review’s finding, not a verified guarantee that no product has ever been recalled. Walmart explains that its recall information links to manufacturer and regulatory announcements, but its recall page alone does not establish a complete, brand-specific history.

Walmart describes Pure Balance as its exclusive brand and lists wet and dry cat foods and treats. Cats.com also says the food is sold on Amazon. Retail listings, stock, prices, and formulas can change: the surfaced Walmart listing for Chicken & Brown Rice showed the 3 lb and 7 lb sizes out of stock when searched. Quick Recap
Before choosing a recipe, check:
- Food form: Compare wet and dry options in light of your cat’s needs and feeding routine.
- All animal proteins: Read the full ingredient list, especially if your cat must avoid a particular protein.
- Guaranteed analysis and moisture: Compare like with like; the reported percentages here apply to specific reviewed recipes.
- Current label and listing: Confirm the formula, package size, stock, and price rather than relying on an older product description.
- Individual suitability: A brand-level rating cannot establish the right food for every cat. Ask your veterinarian about diet choices for a cat with diagnosed conditions or suspected food reactions.
