Can You Give Cats Human Antibiotics?

A veterinarian may prescribe a human antibiotic for a cat in some circumstances, but owners should never select or dose one themselves. Call a vet promptly after an accidental ingestion.

No—not from your medicine cabinet unless a veterinarian has prescribed that medicine for your cat and told you exactly how to give it. A veterinarian may sometimes prescribe a human antibiotic for a cat, but the drug and dose must be chosen for that individual animal. If your cat has already swallowed one, contact a veterinarian promptly with the package details.

Can I give my cat human antibiotics from my medicine cabinet?

No. Don’t give your cat a human prescription or over-the-counter antibiotic on your own, including leftover medicine. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises pet owners not to give a pet anything from a household medicine cabinet before speaking with a veterinarian: FDA: Frequently Asked Questions about Animal Drugs.

A medicine that is appropriate for a person—or that was prescribed for another pet—does not establish that it is safe or appropriate for your cat. Antibiotics differ, and the suitable drug and dose depend on the animal and the situation. Pet Poison Helpline cautions that human and cat antibiotic doses differ: Can You Give Cats Human Antibiotics?.

Can a veterinarian prescribe a human antibiotic for a cat?

Sometimes. In the United States, veterinarians may prescribe certain approved human drugs for animals as extra-label use in appropriate circumstances. That is a veterinarian’s treatment decision, not permission for an owner to choose a medicine, adapt a human prescription, or calculate a dose. Antimicrobial stewardship guidance likewise calls for veterinary oversight and compliance with applicable law and a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship: AAFP basic guidelines of judicious therapeutic use of antimicrobials in cats.

What if my cat already swallowed a human antibiotic?

Call your veterinarian promptly, even if your cat seems well. Have the medication package available and report the product name, strength, estimated amount swallowed, and time of ingestion. If your regular clinic is unavailable, contact a local emergency veterinarian or animal poison service. The right response depends on the specific drug and amount; don’t attempt home treatment or decontamination unless a veterinary professional instructs you to do so.

What to do instead of using medicine you have at home

  • Contact a veterinarian and describe your cat’s symptoms and any medicines already given.
  • Use an antibiotic only when it has been prescribed for this cat, and follow the veterinarian’s directions.
  • Don’t reuse a previous prescription or share another animal’s medicine; ask the veterinarian whether the current problem needs treatment and what treatment is appropriate.
