Cats can be allergic to flea saliva, food ingredients, or environmental allergens. Itching, overgrooming, hair loss, skin sores, and sometimes vomiting or diarrhea may be signs—but they do not reveal the cause on their own. Fleas, infections, parasites, and other conditions can look similar, so a veterinarian’s assessment is important before treatment.

What are the symptoms of allergies in cats?

Common signs include persistent scratching, licking or overgrooming, hair loss, bumps, crusts, sores, and a worsening coat. Some cats with food allergy also have vomiting or diarrhea. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine reports that 10% to 15% of cats affected by food allergy exhibit gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhea; the source page does not state when that estimate was published. Cornell’s food-allergy overview also notes that food-allergy itching can affect the head and neck. Carolyn McDaniel, VMD, describes the pattern this way: “The itching eruptions primarily affect the head and neck area,” but that location is a clue, not a diagnostic rule.

Food-allergy signs may persist rather than follow a seasonal pattern, but neither symptom timing nor appearance confirms an allergy. More than one allergy type can contribute to a cat’s signs, and symptoms overlap with other skin and digestive problems.

What causes allergies in cats?

The main categories are flea allergy, food allergy, and environmental allergy. The suspected trigger and the steps used to investigate it differ:

Type Suspected trigger and clues How a veterinarian investigates it Management direction
Flea allergy An immune reaction to flea saliva; itching and skin lesions can occur even when fleas are not obvious. History, examination, checking for fleas or flea dirt, and further workup as needed. Sustained veterinarian-selected flea control for the cat, with environmental flea management.
Food allergy A reaction to a dietary ingredient; itching may be persistent, with skin signs and sometimes digestive signs. Consider other causes, then use a strict elimination diet trial and controlled food challenge under veterinary guidance. Avoid the identified trigger while maintaining a nutritionally appropriate diet.
Environmental allergy A reaction to environmental allergens; signs can resemble other allergic skin disease. Evaluate other causes first; testing may help identify allergens and guide treatment. Individualized symptom management or allergen-specific immunotherapy may be discussed.

How is flea allergy diagnosed and treated?

Flea allergy is caused by a hypersensitivity to proteins in flea saliva. A flea may be difficult to find, so not seeing one does not rule out flea allergy. A veterinarian considers the cat’s history and symptoms, examines the skin, and may look for fleas or flea dirt as part of the workup.

Management generally requires sustained flea control selected for the individual cat, along with attention to fleas in the environment. Merck’s veterinary reference, reviewed in April 2026, describes long-term control as flea prevention plus supportive care for dermatitis. Medication choices are not interchangeable: use flea treatments only on a veterinarian’s recommendation. Cornell’s flea guidance explains why veterinary input matters. A flea comb can help check for fleas or flea dirt, but it cannot diagnose an allergy or replace veterinary assessment.

How do I know if my cat has a food allergy?

Symptoms alone cannot establish food allergy. It can cause persistent itching and skin lesions, and some affected cats have digestive signs. A cat can develop a reaction after eating the same food for a long time, so previous tolerance does not rule it out.

Diagnosis depends on a strict elimination diet trial followed, if signs improve, by a controlled food challenge. A veterinarian selects a diet based on the cat’s history and directs the process. Extra treats, table scraps, flavored supplements, or unapproved foods can undermine the trial by introducing ingredients outside the planned diet. A casual switch to a retail “limited-ingredient” food is not equivalent: VCA notes that retail limited-ingredient foods may not have the same cross-contamination controls as veterinary diets. Do not choose an arbitrary novel-protein or hydrolyzed food as a substitute for veterinary guidance.

If a challenge causes signs to return, the veterinarian can help identify the dietary trigger and plan a nutritionally appropriate long-term diet that avoids it.

How are environmental allergies evaluated?

Environmental allergy is considered after other plausible causes of itching have been investigated. Merck describes airborne or environmental allergy as difficult to diagnose; parasites, infections, flea allergy, and food allergy need consideration rather than assuming every itchy cat has an environmental allergy. The 2023 AAHA guidance likewise frames feline atopic skin syndrome as a consideration after parasites and infections are ruled out and flea and food allergy are evaluated.

Testing may help identify allergens and inform a treatment plan, but a test result is not, by itself, an explanation for every itchy cat. A veterinarian may discuss individualized symptom management or allergen-specific immunotherapy, which aims to increase tolerance to environmental allergens. If signs continue during treatment, that does not automatically mean the treatment has failed; another problem, such as infection, may be contributing.

When should I take my cat to the vet?

Arrange a veterinary assessment for persistent itching, repeated overgrooming, hair loss, sores or crusts, recurring digestive symptoms, or worsening discomfort. Continued scratching can damage skin and may lead to infection. Fleas, mites, fungal disease, and other disorders can resemble allergy, so appearance alone is not a reliable way to diagnose the cause.
