The most useful thing you can do for an older dog is to stop treating slowing down as a given. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) puts it plainly in its canine senior guidance: “Old age is not a disease.” Changes in movement, appetite, thirst, behavior, weight or routine are information, and they deserve a conversation with your veterinarian. The rest of senior care is a matter of regular check-ups, watching body condition, keeping your dog comfortable and active in ways that suit their body, looking after their teeth, and adapting your home.
This guide follows the 2023 AAHA Senior Care Guidelines for Dogs and Cats and AAHA’s client guidance on the senior life stage. These are professional frameworks, not a protocol that fits every patient, so your vet should tailor each point below to your dog.
When is a dog considered a senior?
There is no single age. AAHA’s canine life-stage guidelines (2019) define the senior stage as the last 25% of a dog’s estimated lifespan. Because breeds and sizes have different expected lifespans, the starting point differs from dog to dog. Ask your veterinarian where your dog sits for their breed and size, and use that as the cue to move to a senior-focused routine.
Veterinary visits and health monitoring
How often to go
AAHA’s client guidance says senior dogs should have a physical exam at least twice a year. The broader senior guidelines recommend a medical workup once or twice yearly, tailored to the patient. That workup may include a complete blood count, a chemistry panel and a urinalysis.

What the guideline testing schedule looks like
AAHA’s 2022 senior-care table for dogs lists the following. These are guideline recommendations, not a guarantee that every test is needed for every dog.
| Test | Guideline frequency for senior dogs |
|---|---|
| CBC, chemistry panel, urinalysis | Every 6–12 months |
| Fecal testing | 1–4 times a year, depending on parasite prevention and lifestyle |
| Heartworm and tick-borne disease testing | Annually |
What to bring to the appointment
AAHA recommends the vet take a detailed history covering eating, drinking, exercise, movement, play, elimination, attitude, grooming, vision and hearing. You are the only person who sees these day to day, so keep short notes between visits. Video helps too: clips of your dog walking, climbing stairs, jumping or getting up can reveal mobility or musculoskeletal problems that a dog may hide in the exam room.

Changes worth a call
- Progressive lethargy
- Behavior change
- Reduced appetite or loss of appetite
- Increased or decreased thirst
- Weight loss
- Changes in mobility
- Wounds that do not heal
None of these points to a specific disease by itself, and none should be written off as “just old age.” The cause is found through history, examination and appropriate tests.
Feeding an older dog
AAHA notes that maintenance energy requirements generally decrease over a dog’s lifetime, and that body-condition and muscle-condition scores are the tools for tracking aging and spotting when the diet needs adjusting. Both matter: a dog can be at a reasonable weight while losing muscle.

No pills, powders, or complicated feeding—just a tasty chew your dog looks forward to.
The guideline cites an ideal body-condition score of 4.5–5 on a 9-point scale, and reports that calorie-restrictive diets have been shown to increase longevity in dogs. Treat that as context, not an instruction to cut your dog’s food. Reduce portions only with veterinary guidance, especially if your dog is losing weight unintentionally or has a medical condition.
Also note that, according to AAHA, the Association of American Feed Control Officials does not currently have senior-specific nutrition guidelines. A “senior” label on a bag does not show that a food suits your dog. Weight, muscle condition, activity level and any diagnosed illness should drive the choice, made with your veterinary team.

Exercise, mobility and comfort
AAHA advises discussing a safe plan for daily physical and mental exercise with your veterinarian. As sight, hearing, awareness or movement change, walks, play, the home and car travel may need adapting. Some dogs do better with familiar, controlled play settings than with busy, unpredictable ones.
There is no one-size-fits-all walk length, supplement, pain medication or mobility aid for senior dogs, and none is endorsed here. If your dog develops new stiffness, reluctance to move, trouble rising or an altered gait, tell your vet and share video. Pain and mobility assessment is a standard part of senior evaluation, and treatment options depend on the findings.

Dental care
AAHA says the mouth should be examined at every veterinary visit. Older and smaller dogs are at increased risk of periodontal disease, and dental pain can affect eating and quality of life, so a dog that eats less or chews on one side may have a mouth problem rather than an appetite problem.
Proper dental treatment may require anesthesia and dental radiographs. Your veterinarian should weigh the individual risks and benefits for your dog, which is especially relevant if the dog has other health conditions.
For home care, AAHA suggests asking your veterinary team about products approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC). Look for the VOHC seal and check that a product suits your dog. Home-care products support oral health but do not replace an oral exam or treat established periodontal disease.
Adapting daily life
Use what you learn at the vet visit to adjust the routine. AAHA’s guidance points to the home, walks, play and vehicle travel as the places where small changes make an older dog safer and more comfortable. Ask your veterinarian which adaptations suit your dog’s particular sensory or movement changes, and revisit the question at each check-up, since needs shift over time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe 2023 guidelines also treat behavior support and end-of-life planning as part of senior care. Raise both early, while there is no pressure, so decisions about comfort and quality of life are made calmly and with your vet’s input.
