Three 2025 books, three very different ways an animal can change a human life: a search-and-rescue dog working a landslide, a magical Kyoto clinic that prescribes cats, and a shelter dog who joins a family facing a mother’s cancer. Sally Rosenthal reviewed them for Best Friends Animal Society on November 25, 2025, under the idea of how much our animal friends help us through life’s challenges. Here is what each book is, who it suits, and what to know before you pick one up.

A Dog’s Devotion: a search-and-rescue team at work
Suzanne Elshult and James Guy Mansfield’s 2025 book follows Keb, a four-year-old search-and-rescue dog. It opens with the team’s work after the 2014 Oso landslide in Washington, then moves through searches in snowy mountains, forests and rugged terrain. Along the way it explains how search-and-rescue teams are trained and how they operate.
Know before you read: this is not a conventional happy-rescue story. According to the review, Keb helped recover people who had died in the landslide. The book suits readers who want a realistic look at disaster response and canine training and can handle that subject matter.

If you liked this kind of book: Rosenthal recommends it to readers who enjoyed Susannah Charleson’s Scent of the Missing.
We’ll Prescribe You Another Cat: comfort fiction from Kyoto
Syou Ishida’s novel, translated by E. Madison Shimoda, is a sequel to We’ll Prescribe You a Cat. Its linked stories return to the fictional Kokoro Clinic for the Soul, which has no actual address and sits in a cobbled alley in Kyoto. Patients come for its unusual approach to whatever troubles them. Rosenthal calls it charming and cat-centered, with magical realism.
Rank #2
- Orange Sky Books-Words To The Rescue
Know before you read: if you like to read series in order, start with the first book. This is fiction, so the clinic’s “prescriptions” are a storytelling device, not guidance on real treatment.
Molly and Potato: a picture book about a parent’s illness
Kelly Curtin and Molly Hallinan wrote this short book from their own life. A dog-loving girl faces her mother’s cancer diagnosis, and Potato, a shelter dog with emotional baggage, joins the family. The story is told from two viewpoints, the child’s and the dog’s, and is aimed at ages 5 to 9. Rosenthal says it handles the emotional ups and downs in clear, age-appropriate language.
Know before you buy: a parent’s cancer is central to the story. Adults may want to read it first to judge whether it fits a particular child, especially one with a seriously ill family member.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one should you choose?
- You want a true account of working dogs: A Dog’s Devotion, if you are comfortable with disaster-recovery themes.
- You want a gentle, cat-filled escape: We’ll Prescribe You Another Cat, ideally after the first book.
- You want to help a child talk about illness and a new pet: Molly and Potato, read together.
The three share a theme of connection between people and animals, but they differ sharply in genre and tone. Choose by audience, how much difficult material you want, and whether you prefer nonfiction or fiction.
