Help! My Dog Just Ate Some Gummies! What Do I Do?

If your dog ate gummies, call a vet, emergency hospital, or poison control right away. Here's what to gather, what not to do, and why THC, xylitol, chocolate, and vitamins differ.

Call a veterinarian, an emergency animal hospital, or an animal poison control service now. Don’t wait to see whether your dog gets sick. Gummies can hide very different hazards, including THC, xylitol, chocolate, and concentrated vitamins or minerals. Some of the dangerous ones cause no visible signs for hours. Grab the package, then use the steps below.

What to do in the first few minutes

  1. Separate your dog from the rest. Remove any remaining gummies and the wrapper so nothing more is eaten.
  2. Find the package, or photograph the label. You need the product name and the full ingredient list, including the “other ingredients” section.
  3. Gather the facts a professional will ask for: the product, roughly how many gummies are missing, the time your dog ate them, your dog’s approximate weight, and any signs you see now.
  4. Call. Phone your regular vet or the nearest emergency hospital. You can also call a poison control service:
    • ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center: (888) 426-4435
    • Pet Poison Helpline: (855) 764-7661

These are U.S.-oriented numbers. Outside the U.S., ask your local vet or emergency clinic who handles poisonings. Confirm any consultation fee when you call.

  5. Follow the instructions exactly. If your dog is already wobbly, very drowsy, vomiting, shaking, or having seizures, go to urgent veterinary care and phone ahead from the road.

The ASPCA’s guidance, published September 28, 2022, puts it this way: “If you suspect your pet may have ingested something toxic, please contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately.”

What not to do at home

  • Don’t induce vomiting unless a veterinarian or veterinary toxicologist tells you to. VCA warns that a dog exposed to xylitol may already have low blood sugar, and forcing vomiting can make that worse.
  • Don’t give activated charcoal, milk, food, or home remedies on your own. Vomiting and charcoal are treatment decisions that depend on the ingredient, the amount, and your dog’s condition. Professionals sometimes use them, but owners shouldn’t improvise them.
  • Don’t try to calculate a “safe” dose from a guessed gummy count. Labels are often incomplete, and the right answer depends on the ingredient and your dog’s size and health.
  • Don’t wait for symptoms. A dog that looks normal may still have eaten something dangerous. Xylitol and chocolate in particular can cause delayed signs.

Which gummy was it? Why the label matters

“Gummies” isn’t one exposure. The ASPCA’s article covers THC and CBD edibles, sugar-free candy with xylitol, melatonin, multivitamin and fish-oil gummies, vitamin D, iron, and 5-HTP. A single product can contain more than one hazard, so read the whole label. Don’t assume a product sold as CBD is free of THC.

THC and cannabis edibles

THC can cause heavy sleepiness or sedation, unsteadiness, and exaggerated reactions to sound and light. It can also change heart rate, body temperature, and blood pressure, and sometimes causes vomiting or more serious neurologic signs. Pet Poison Helpline says signs after a high-THC edible may begin within 30 minutes to an hour, though timing and severity vary. VCA states there is no official safe exposure level and notes that highly concentrated cannabis foods have been linked to animal deaths. A small edible or an apparently fine dog is not a reason to stand down.

PawMergency – Activated Charcoal First Aid Kit Emergency Rescue for Dogs, Cats, Puppy & Pet Poison Kit, Camping Survival Remedy Essential,Oral Anti Diarrhea Digestive Paste Ready Absorb Toxins
  • PREPARED HERO PEACE OF MIND - Pets are pets. They get into things, especially when you're not looking. Be ready when your pet accidentally eats something toxic. Keep PawMergency in your kitchen, car, or travel bag—instant protection for those critical moments at home, the beach, or anywhere life takes you.
  • GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT FOR YOUR PET - One tube covers dogs & cats up to 30 lbs. Dog weighs 31-60 lbs? Get 2 tubes. Dog weighs 61-90 lbs? Get 3 tubes. Dog weighs 91-120 lbs? Get 4 tubes. Dog weighs more than 121 lbs? Get 5 tubes. We recommend giving at least 1cc/1lb of body weight. Less than the required amount won't fully absorb the toxin — make sure you have enough based on your pet's weight.
  • BROAD SPECTRUM ABSORPTION - PawMergency absorbs most common household items such as chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, and many more. It works by binding toxins in your pet's digestive tract before they can be absorbed, allowing them to be eliminated through normal bowel movements. A must have for your pet's first aid kit!
  • SUPERIOR MANUFACTURING - PawMergency is proudly made in the USA by a National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) preferred supplier. It’s produced following strict Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and tested by third-party labs to ensure quality, purity, and potency.
  • 2 YEAR SHELF LIFE - After each use, simply put the cap back on the end of the tube and store for up to 2 years in a cool, dry place.

Cannabis edibles also often carry other ingredients. VCA gives the example of a cannabis brownie, which can mean cannabis and chocolate toxicity together. Xylitol, raisins, or lots of fat can add further risk. Care may involve monitoring and supportive treatment, and whether to decontaminate is the clinician’s call.

Xylitol (sugar-free gummies)

Check sugar-free gummies, vitamins, supplements, and some over-the-counter medicines for xylitol, which may also be labeled birch sugar. In dogs it can cause a drop in blood sugar, seizures, liver failure, and death. VCA says low blood sugar can appear within 30 minutes to two hours, while liver injury may show up later. That makes a quiet first few hours poor reassurance. Tell the professional if xylitol is on the label, even if you aren’t sure how much your dog ate.

Chocolate gummies and edibles

Risk depends on the amount and type of chocolate. Darker chocolate has more theobromine and caffeine than milk chocolate. Pet Poison Helpline says chocolate signs can appear within six to 12 hours. Sugar-free chocolate products may also contain xylitol, and high-fat ingredients add another concern, so the full packaging matters.

Vitamins, minerals, and supplements

  • Vitamin D: the ASPCA says excess can raise calcium and phosphorus levels and injure the kidneys.
  • Iron: may irritate or injure the gastrointestinal tract and, at large enough doses, the liver.
  • 5-HTP: can cause serious neurologic and whole-body signs.
  • Melatonin: the ASPCA describes melatonin itself as less likely to be a serious hazard, but says to check the label for xylitol and other ingredients.

How a professional decides what happens next

No article can judge your dog’s risk for you. A vet or poison specialist weighs the same handful of factors:

Factor Why it matters
Ingredient THC, xylitol, chocolate, and vitamins each cause different problems and need different monitoring.
Amount and concentration Milligrams per gummy matter more than the number eaten.
Time since eating Determines whether decontamination is still useful and what signs to expect.
Dog’s size and health Small dogs and dogs with existing conditions are affected at lower exposures.
Co-ingredients One product can carry several hazards at once.

Depending on the answers, they may tell you to monitor at home, bring your dog in for observation, or start treatment such as supportive care. Be honest about cannabis. Vets treat the dog, not the owner, and accurate information changes the treatment.

Signs that mean go now

  • Extreme drowsiness, stumbling, or inability to stand
  • Repeated vomiting or drooling
  • Tremors, collapse, or seizures
  • Unusual agitation, rapid or slow heartbeat, or abnormal breathing
  • Weakness or disorientation, which can point to low blood sugar

If the label shows xylitol, or you can’t tell what your dog ate, treat the situation as urgent even when your dog seems fine.

After the emergency

Once your dog is safe, store edibles and supplements in closed cabinets or containers, not on a counter, nightstand, or in a bag. Dogs can open or chew through packaging and eat a whole bottle of chewable vitamins. Keep your vet’s number and a poison-control number saved in your phone.
