Cats are especially vulnerable, and dogs and other small animals are also at risk. If you share your home with a pet, the safest habits are simple: never put concentrated oil on an animal, store bottles where pets can’t reach or knock them over, and think carefully about whether and how you run a diffuser.
Why concentrated oils are a problem for pets
The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center warns that concentrated essential oils can be dangerous to pets. Dogs and cats that walk through spilled oil, get it on their coat, or have it applied directly to them can develop health problems, and swallowing oil can also cause signs of poisoning. The ASPCA recommends against applying oils directly to a pet because concentration, formulation and product quality vary so much from bottle to bottle.
Pet Poison Helpline describes three routes of exposure: oral, skin and lungs. Cats are particularly sensitive, and grooming adds to the risk, because oil that lands on the coat ends up in the mouth.
One number worth understanding
In a June 23, 2022 article, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center said that “seven or eight drops” of concentrated tea tree oil may cause problems in pets. Treat that as an illustration, not a dose rule. It is not a safe amount, and it does not apply to other oils. No source reviewed gives a universally safe oil, concentration or exposure time for pets.

Oils linked to poisoning
Pet Poison Helpline lists oils associated with poisoning in each species. These lists are not a complete toxicity ranking, and an oil missing from them is not proven safe. Risk depends on the oil, its concentration, the dose and how the pet was exposed.
| Species | Oils Pet Poison Helpline associates with poisoning |
|---|---|
| Cats | Wintergreen, sweet birch, citrus, pine, ylang ylang, peppermint, cinnamon, pennyroyal, clove, eucalyptus, tea tree |
| Dogs | Wintergreen, sweet birch, pine, cinnamon, pennyroyal, eucalyptus, tea tree |
Diffusers: not all of them behave the same way
Pet Poison Helpline separates diffusers into two kinds, and the difference matters.

- Passive diffusers do not emit oil droplets.
- Active diffusers (nebulizing and ultrasonic) do emit droplets. These can settle on fur, be absorbed through the skin, or be swallowed when the pet grooms. The pet is also breathing the scent.
Strong odors alone can irritate a pet’s airways. Pet Poison Helpline lists watery eyes or nose, nasal or throat irritation, drooling or vomiting, coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing as possible signs. Pets with asthma, allergies, chronic bronchitis or smoke exposure may be at greater risk.
The ASPCA says brief diffuser use in a secured area that a dog or cat can’t enter is not likely to be a problem. It advises skipping diffusers altogether if your pet has a history of breathing problems.

Species beyond cats and dogs
The ASPCA advises avoiding household oil diffusers where birds are present, because their respiratory tracts are very sensitive. It notes similar concerns for rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters.
A prevention checklist
- Don’t apply essential oils to your pet’s skin or coat, and don’t add them to a pet’s food or water.
- Keep bottles out of paw reach. A lockable box or a latched cabinet can help, but it supports good habits and isn’t a guarantee. Make sure the bottle is capped and upright after each use.
- Place diffusers where pets can’t tip them, lick them or walk through spills.
- If you diffuse, choose a closed-off room your pet can’t enter, keep sessions short, and let the room air out before the pet returns.
- Skip active diffusers for cats, birds, small mammals and any pet with respiratory disease.
- Mop up spills right away, and keep pets out of the area until they are cleaned.
- Watch for coughing, drooling, vomiting, wheezing, or watery eyes and nose after any scent exposure.
What to do after a suspected exposure
- Get the pet away from the source. If it has breathing symptoms, move it into fresh air. Pet Poison Helpline advises seeking emergency veterinary care if the symptoms don’t resolve quickly.
- Call for advice promptly. This applies to suspected swallowing, skin or fur contact, or inhalation. Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service. Don’t try home treatments in place of professional guidance.
- Have details ready: the oil, the product label, how much may have been involved, how the pet was exposed, when it happened, and the pet’s species and weight.
The ASPCA Poison Control line is (888) 426-4435 and is listed as available 24/7, 365 days a year; a consultation fee may apply. Pet Poison Helpline’s article lists (855) 764-7661. Service arrangements can change, so confirm both numbers and save them in your phone now rather than during an emergency.
