Early analyses found clearly different microbial signatures between the two groups. But this is not yet a proven, routine forensic test. The project is still building protocols, laboratory capacity and chain-of-custody procedures, and it is working toward validation.
Why trafficking needs a new kind of evidence
According to the World Parrot Trust’s project page, African Grey Parrots are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. They were moved to CITES Appendix I in 2017. The project describes wild-sourced international trade as prohibited, while captive-bred birds can still move through legal channels. That gap creates a laundering risk. A wild-caught bird can be declared as captive-bred and enter trade with paperwork that looks legitimate.
A bird’s appearance and its documents may not settle where it came from. That is the problem a biological marker could help with. WPT’s Summer 2025 PsittaScene article notes “over 200” commercial breeding operations registered with CITES to supply birds for export. It gives no precise reference date for that count, so treat it as an approximate scale, not a verified current total.
Check the current CITES listing and your own jurisdiction’s rules before relying on any of these legal descriptions.

How the microbiome method works
From droppings to data
Researchers extract DNA from a fecal sample and sequence marker genes to see which organisms are present. WPT describes two markers:
- 16S profiles bacteria.
- 18S picks up fungi, parasites, plant material and some cells from the bird itself.
The collection is described as non-invasive and needs only one fecal sample. The bird does not have to be handled invasively.

Why wild and captive birds should differ
The reasoning is that diet and environment shape the gut community. A wild Grey Parrot eats forest foods and lives in forest conditions. A bird in a commercial breeding facility eats a managed diet in a very different setting. The result should be microbial profiles that differ in detectable ways.

- Edible chew toys --- For birds, it is important that we keep something for them to chew on. In their native habitat, they engage in chiseling holes and tearing branches. It's something they were born with.
- Any bird has different habits, if your bird does not like the toy, please feel free to contact us for an exchange or return (except for human damage).
- wild Grey Parrots, sampled beneath roost sites and from birds seized from traffickers
- parrots reared in commercial breeding facilities in South Africa
The article’s authors, Steven Janssen, DVM (WPT Wild Parrot Rescue Coordinator), and Rowan Martin, PhD (WPT Director for Africa and Bird Trade Programmes), wrote: “The analyses conducted to date show dramatically different microbiome signatures, indicating that the technique can determine if parrots were reared in the wild or in captivity.”
That is the authors’ own account of their project. It is not an independent performance evaluation. The article gives no sample count.

What is not yet established
The project materials describe validation as a current objective, not a finished result. They do not report:
- accuracy, sensitivity or specificity
- false-positive or false-negative rates
- completed field validation
- any assessment of whether results would be admissible in court
A microbiome result is best seen as a developing tool for assessing a bird’s source. It should not be treated as standalone proof of a crime or of a bird’s legal status. A prosecutor would most plausibly use it alongside permits, documents, breeding-facility records and physical inspection.

Open questions follow from the biology. A captive-bred bird fed unusual foods, or a wild bird held in captivity for a long time, might look different from the typical profiles. The sources do not say how the method handles such cases, so that should be seen as unresolved.
Where the project is heading
WPT’s project page describes a 2025–2026 phase in South Africa, Iraq and the UAE. The work is moving from comparative studies toward use in real supply chains. Its listed components are:
- building partner laboratory capacity
- developing protocols for sample collection and storage
- engaging stakeholders and training staff
- setting up transparent chain of custody, so samples can be traced from collection to analysis
- validating the approach for eventual enforcement use
Possible sampling points include breeding or quarantine facilities, airports, markets and other supply-chain locations. Chain of custody matters because even a scientifically sound result is weak evidence if nobody can show how the sample was collected, stored and tested.
Where it fits among other detection tools
A 2022 review in Frontiers in Conservation Science (September 22, 2022) describes the wider wildlife-trafficking detection toolkit. It includes X-ray screening, physical inspection, detection dogs, online investigations and forensic methods. These tools answer different questions. Dogs and X-rays help find concealed animals. Microbiome profiling would address a different question: whether a bird that is already in front of officials came from where its paperwork says. It complements the other tools and does not replace them.

What this means for pet owners and buyers
There is no consumer test, kit or product for this. The work depends on specialist sequencing, laboratory processes and evidence handling. Consumer microbiome tests or supplements for parrots would not help detect trafficking. If you are considering an African Grey, the practical steps are the usual ones: ask for CITES and breeder documentation, and be wary of sellers who cannot provide it.
