Rabbit cat foods are not all the same kind of product. Among six widely listed options, one rabbit recipe also contains chicken, the formats range from wet pâté to dry kibble to freeze-dried, and the nutritional-adequacy statements differ. This guide compares them from manufacturer product information. It is a label comparison, not a feeding trial, so it ranks no food by palatability, digestion or allergy results.
The six rabbit cat foods at a glance
| Product | Format | What the manufacturer states | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instinct Limited Ingredient Diet Real Rabbit Entree | Wet pâté | Describes a single animal protein and one vegetable | Check the current package for the full ingredient list and adequacy statement |
| Merrick Purrfect Bistro Grain Free Rabbit Recipe | Wet pâté | Formulated for adult maintenance | The ingredient panel lists chicken liver, chicken giblets and chicken alongside rabbit, so it is not a single-protein diet |
| Nature’s Logic Feline Rabbit Meal Feast | Dry kibble | Rabbit meal is the first ingredient; described as complete and balanced for all life stages | The maker says it is comparable in nutritional adequacy to a product substantiated by AAFCO feeding trials. That is not the same as being feeding-trial tested |
| Instinct Raw Longevity Farm-Raised Rabbit Recipe | Freeze-dried raw | Adult maintenance (per a product guide dated December 2021) | The guide is older than the other sources, so confirm the current formula and label |
| KOHA Limited Ingredient Diet Rabbit Au Jus | Wet pâté | Adult maintenance; rabbit is the named meat | Product-page language, not evidence of allergy outcomes; confirm against current retail packaging |
| Northwest Naturals Rabbit Recipe for Cats | Not confirmed here; check the current SKU | All-life-stages formulation | Confirm format and label for the version you are buying |
What separates these foods
“Rabbit recipe” does not mean rabbit only
The clearest example is Merrick’s rabbit pâté, whose ingredient panel includes chicken ingredients. If you want rabbit as the only animal protein, read every animal-derived item on the panel, not the name on the front. Instinct’s limited-ingredient pâté and KOHA’s Au Jus are positioned around a single named meat, but verify that on the package you hold, since recipes change.
Format changes how you feed it
Wet pâté, dry kibble, freeze-dried and raw or frozen foods are different product types with different storage, feeding and handling needs. Comparing a kibble with a pâté on ingredients alone misses that. The most like-for-like group here is the three wet pâtés: Instinct, Merrick and KOHA.
Adequacy statements are not interchangeable
Three wordings appear across these products:
- Adult maintenance (Merrick, KOHA, Instinct freeze-dried): suitable for adult cats, not for kittens or pregnant or nursing cats.
- All life stages (Nature’s Logic, Northwest Naturals): the manufacturer states it covers growth and reproduction as well.
- “Comparable” to a feeding-trial product (Nature’s Logic): a formulation-based claim with a feeding-trial comparison, which differs from a food that passed a trial itself.
Look for the exact AAFCO statement on the bag or can, and match it to your cat’s age.

“Limited ingredient” is a positioning claim
It means fewer ingredients. It does not prove a health benefit, and it does not show a food suits a particular cat.
Which one fits which situation
- You want the fewest animal proteins in a wet food: start with Instinct’s Real Rabbit Entree or KOHA’s Rabbit Au Jus, then confirm each panel.
- You want a rabbit-flavored wet food and chicken is fine: Merrick is an option, with its chicken ingredients stated plainly.
- You feed dry food: Nature’s Logic is the dry option in this set, with rabbit meal listed first.
- You have a kitten or a pregnant or nursing cat: restrict yourself to foods whose labels say all life stages, such as Nature’s Logic and Northwest Naturals, and confirm on the current label.
- You want raw convenience: Instinct Raw Longevity is freeze-dried, but check the current label because the guide we have is from 2021.
Rabbit and food sensitivities
Cat owners often look for rabbit as a “novel protein” when they suspect a food reaction. Online discussions, including a veterinary Q&A thread titled “Cat foods made with rabbit?”, show that interest, but they are anecdotes. No clinical study or veterinary guidance found for this comparison shows that rabbit diagnoses, treats or prevents allergy or digestive disease, and rabbit is not “hypoallergenic.” A proper elimination trial uses a carefully chosen diet and strict control of treats and other food, and a retail limited-ingredient food may not suit it. Raise suspected reactions with your veterinarian before changing the diet.
