The best way to keep a pet moving all year is to change the kind, timing and intensity of activity as conditions change, not to chase one fixed routine. A sniff-heavy stroll suits a mild afternoon. An early-morning amble or an indoor game suits a heatwave. A short, leashed outing followed by a paw wipe-down suits an icy week.
The strongest veterinary guidance available is about dogs, so the examples below are canine. Cats, rabbits and other companions have different needs, and a vet can advise on species-appropriate play for them.
Start with the individual animal, not a number
No official source we reviewed sets a universal daily exercise target, so be wary of any article that does. The ASPCA says a dog’s exercise needs vary by breed or mix, sex, age and health. The AVMA advises talking with your veterinarian before starting an exercise program.
That conversation matters most for puppies, seniors, overweight pets, short-nosed (brachycephalic) dogs and any animal with a medical condition. Ask what kind of activity, how hard and for how long suits your pet, then adjust with the seasons.

Why activity is worth the effort
According to the ASPCA, exercise helps dogs use calories, gives them mental stimulation and supports their health. Supervised games can also ease boredom and give an outlet for instinctive urges such as retrieving, chasing, digging, herding or chewing. Movement is only part of the benefit; engaging a dog’s mind counts too.

Mild, comfortable days: make it a sensory outing
Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center describes the outdoors as “often some of the best enrichment spaces for our dogs, providing endless sources for new smells, textures, sights and sounds.” Use that on good-weather days:

- Take a “sniff walk” where the dog sets the pace and investigates, rather than a march to a target distance.
- Vary the route and the surface (grass, packed trails, pavement) so each outing offers something new.
- Keep the effort matched to your dog’s current fitness and health, not to what the dog did last summer.
Hot or humid days: go early, go gentle, go short
The AVMA advises exercising in cooler parts of the day and avoiding strenuous activity in hot or humid conditions. It also recommends breaks, water for you and your pet, and shade. Overweight pets and short-nosed dogs are at higher risk in warm weather.
- Shift walks to the coolest hours and keep the pace relaxed.
- Stop often, offer water, and rest in shade.
- During extreme heat, switch to indoor play (see below).
- Never leave an animal in a parked car in warm weather.
Know the emergency signs. Cornell describes heatstroke as a life-threatening veterinary emergency linked to hot or humid exposure and strenuous exercise. Seek urgent veterinary care for excessive panting or drooling, trouble breathing, weakness, confusion, vomiting, seizures or collapse. Any dog can be vulnerable, so do not wait to see whether it passes.

Cold, snowy or icy days: let your dog’s behavior set the limit
Cornell notes that cold tolerance varies with age, size, nutritional status, health and coat, so there is no single temperature cutoff that suits every dog. Watch how your dog behaves, and head inside if the cold seems to be affecting comfort or behavior. Shorter outings may suit small dogs, puppies, thin-coated breeds and dogs with health concerns.
- Keep your dog on a leash on snow and ice.
- After every walk, wash and dry the paws and stomach.
- Check between the toes and look for redness, cracks, packed snow, salt and chemical residue.
- Consider booties for extra coverage, which the ASPCA describes as optional, or ask your vet about a protectant.
Indoor days, any season
Bad-weather days still count. Supervised indoor games can supply mental stimulation and satisfy the urge to chase, retrieve or chew. A puzzle toy that makes your dog work for treats is one option. The ASPCA’s guidance supports supervised games in general, though, and not any particular product, and it does not say puzzles replace physical exercise.

- Stay present while your pet plays.
- Stop if the animal seems uncomfortable or overexerted.
- Rotate games so they stay interesting.

Five questions to ask before any outing
- What are the weather and surface hazards today? Consider heat, humidity, ice and de-icing chemicals.
- How demanding is the activity, and for how long?
- Does it suit this pet’s age, size, coat, breed traits, health and conditioning?
- Does it offer sniffing, exploring or problem-solving, not just motion?
- Can I supervise it safely where it will happen?
