Plain fruits and vegetables, and small bites of boneless, unseasoned cooked meat, can work as occasional snacks. What counts as safe depends on the species, how the food is prepared, how much you give and the animal’s health. Table scraps and shared meals don’t qualify, and snacks shouldn’t replace a complete regular diet.
What “safe to share” actually means
A food is safe to share when four things line up: the ingredient suits that species, it is served plain, the portion is small, and your pet has no medical reason to avoid it. A carrot stick passes. A spoonful of your onion-and-garlic pasta sauce does not, even though both are “people food.”
Foods that can work as occasional snacks
Vegetables
The ASPCA lists carrots, celery, broccoli, green beans, cauliflower and cooked pumpkin as vegetable snack options. Cut them into bite-size pieces to reduce choking risk, and keep cooked vegetables unseasoned: no butter, salt, oil or sauce.
Fruits
The ASPCA’s fruit list includes apples, bananas, cucumbers, pineapple, cantaloupe, blueberries, strawberries and kiwi. Remove pits and cores’ hard parts, and cut pieces small.

Lean cooked meat
The ASPCA says small amounts of lean cooked chicken, turkey, beef or pork can be fine when boneless and unseasoned. These are occasional extras, not a home-prepared replacement for a balanced diet.
Dog-specific extras
VCA’s dog-training guidance lists apples, cheese, cooked eggs, lettuce, carrots, zucchini, green beans, pasta noodles, berries, seedless watermelon, cooked meats and cooked seafood as foods dogs often enjoy. It recommends no seasoning and choosing lower-calorie options where possible. That list is written for dogs; it is not blanket approval for cats or other pets. Dairy is a good example of why: the ASPCA notes that many pets digest lactose poorly, so it can cause digestive upset.

Foods to keep away from pets
The AVMA’s household-hazards list says to keep these away from pets: alcohol, avocado, chives, chocolate, coconut water, coffee and coffee grounds, fatty foods, fruit pits, garlic, grapes and raisins, macadamia nuts, onions, salty snacks, tea, yeast dough and anything containing xylitol. It also cautions that many foods harmless to people can harm pets, especially in large amounts.
The ASPCA adds context on several of them. Hazards don’t affect every species identically.

| Item | Concern (per ASPCA) |
|---|---|
| Grapes and raisins | Can damage dogs’ kidneys |
| Onions, garlic, chives | Can irritate the digestive system and damage red blood cells; cats are more susceptible |
| Xylitol (sweetener) | Can cause low blood sugar and potentially liver damage |
| Excess salt | Can cause serious illness |
| Dairy | Many pets digest lactose poorly, so digestive upset is possible |
| Too much fat or sugar | Can contribute to pancreatitis |
Bones and raw animal products
Raw bones can injure or obstruct the gastrointestinal tract. Raw meat and eggs can carry bacteria that harm pets and people. The AVMA’s policy states: “The AVMA discourages feeding any raw or undercooked animal-sourced proteins (e.g., meat, poultry, fish, egg, milk*) to dogs and cats because of their risk to human and animal health.” Risk applies even to animals that look healthy.
How to prepare and portion a shared snack
- Remove bones, pits and hard cores.
- Skip seasoning, sauces, oils and butter.
- Cut pieces small enough to avoid choking.
- Introduce an unfamiliar food sparingly, since new foods can upset digestion.
- Count the snack as part of the day’s calories, not an addition on top of a full meal.
How much is too much?
The ASPCA article on this topic says snacks should make up no more than 5% of daily calories. Separately, VCA’s dog-training guidance gives a 10% ceiling for dog treat calories. The two figures come from different sources and scopes: one is general snack advice, the other is specific to dog treats. Use the one that matches your situation, and don’t treat either as a universal allowance. A pet on a prescribed diet or with a medical condition, such as diabetes, pancreatitis or kidney disease, needs individual advice from its veterinarian before any extras.

A hygiene caveat from the AVMA
A more conservative view exists. An older AVMA handout on zoonotic diseases advises storing pet food separately from people food and says, “For your health as well as your pet’s health, don’t share your food with your pet.” Read in context, it is a hygiene recommendation. Washing hands after handling pet food and snacks, and keeping raw items away from both, fits with the ASPCA’s more permissive guidance on plain, suitable snacks.
If your pet eats something concerning
- Take away any remaining food and note what was eaten and roughly how much.
- Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison-control service right away. Don’t wait for symptoms.
- The ASPCA lists its Animal Poison Control number (U.S.) as (888) 426-4435. Confirm the number on the ASPCA’s site, since contact details can change.
- Follow the professional’s instructions; don’t induce vomiting unless you are told to.
Food is a common cause of these calls. The ASPCA reported that 16.4% of its poison-control calls in 2025 involved food and drink (ASPCA, 2026). That figure reflects the organization’s own call data, not all pet poisonings.
