Why Does My Cat’s Poop Smell So Bad? Causes and What to Do

Foul-smelling stool is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Learn how duration, stool changes, and other signs can help you decide when your cat needs veterinary care.

Very foul-smelling poop is a symptom, not a diagnosis. If your cat’s stool is loose or watery, a sudden food change or stressful event may cause a brief episode, but persistent or recurring diarrhea can have several underlying causes. Pay attention to how long it lasts and whether your cat is eating, acting normally, vomiting, or showing other signs of illness.

What foul-smelling cat poop can mean

Cornell’s guide to feline diarrhea lists unusually foul-smelling stool as one possible feature of diarrhea. Odor by itself cannot tell you what is wrong. A brief episode after a sudden diet change or stressful event may pass, while ongoing or recurring diarrhea can be associated with intestinal inflammation, infection, parasites, dietary sensitivity, malabsorption, or other disorders.

Malabsorption is one concern a veterinarian may consider when diarrhea is long-term, particularly if it occurs with weight loss or a change in appetite. The smell alone does not distinguish this or any other cause.

Clues that help distinguish possible causes

These patterns can help you describe what is happening to your veterinarian, but they are not a way to diagnose your cat at home.

What you notice Why it may matter
One brief episode after a food change or stressful event A temporary digestive upset is possible.
Loose or watery stool that continues or keeps returning A veterinarian may need to investigate a wider range of causes, including infection, parasites, dietary sensitivity, or other digestive disorders.
Soft, poorly formed stool that is pale, mucousy, or fatty-looking Giardia is one possibility, but these signs are not specific to it.
Diarrhea with weight loss or changed appetite over time Long-term digestive problems, including malabsorption, may need evaluation.
Blood or mucus in stool, vomiting, or reduced appetite These signs can occur with gastrointestinal parasites and other illnesses; they do not identify the cause on their own.

Giardia and other parasites

Giardia can cause soft, poorly formed, pale, malodorous stool, sometimes with mucus or a fatty appearance. Some infected cats have no signs. A veterinarian typically looks for Giardia cysts or antigen in stool; because cysts may be shed intermittently, a single sample may not resolve the question. Do not assume odor means Giardia or give a parasite medicine without veterinary guidance. See the Merck Veterinary Manual’s overview of protozoal digestive disorders in cats.

Gastrointestinal parasites can cause nonspecific signs such as diarrhea, mucus or blood in feces, vomiting, and appetite loss. Cornell reports that gastrointestinal parasites have reached prevalence “as high as 45% in some populations,” and that roundworms affect “25% to 75% of cats,” with higher rates in kittens. These figures describe parasite prevalence in populations; they do not estimate the chance that an individual cat’s foul-smelling stool is caused by parasites. The publication year for these figures is not stated in Cornell’s gastrointestinal parasites guide.

Could the smell be from the anal area?

Not every strong smell comes from poop itself. Small amounts of anal-sac secretion normally have a strong odor. Scooting, persistent licking around the rear, or painful defecation can point to an anal-area problem rather than a stool issue. Merck describes these signs in its guide to rectal and anal disorders in cats.

When to contact a veterinarian

Contact a veterinarian promptly if diarrhea lasts longer than a day or two and your cat also has poor appetite, lethargy, or vomiting. Cornell advises veterinary care as soon as possible in that situation. Persistent or recurring diarrhea also deserves veterinary advice even if the odor is the only obvious change; odor cannot rule out an underlying problem.

If you are unsure whether your cat’s signs are urgent, call your veterinary clinic and describe the symptoms and their duration. Do not give human antidiarrheal medicines or other over-the-counter products unless a veterinarian specifically directs you to: some can harm cats.

What to do before the veterinary visit

  1. Track the episode. Note when it began, how often your cat passes stool, and whether it is formed, loose, or watery. Record its color and whether you see mucus or blood.
  2. Watch for other changes. Keep track of appetite, energy, vomiting, and any weight loss.
  3. Note recent changes and exposures. Tell the clinic about new food, stressful events, and contact with other cats.
  4. Ask whether to bring a stool sample. Your clinic can advise whether a recent sample would help. Depending on your cat’s history and examination, the veterinarian may consider fecal testing, bloodwork, imaging, or other tests.

Merck’s introduction to digestive disorders in cats describes the role of a complete history and diagnostic evaluation. A veterinarian can decide which tests fit your cat’s signs; no single home observation, including odor, can identify the cause.
