Kittens can get diarrhea from a sudden food change, the transition to solid food, stress, intestinal parasites, infections, or other illness. You cannot identify the cause from stool appearance alone. Because diarrhea can lead to fluid loss, contact a veterinarian promptly if your kitten is lethargic, refuses food, vomits, or has blood in the stool.
Common reasons kittens get diarrhea
A new bout of diarrhea may have a simple trigger, but the same symptom can also accompany illness. Tell your veterinarian when it started and what else has changed; appearance alone does not establish a diagnosis.
Food changes and weaning
An abrupt change in food or feeding routine can cause short-lived diarrhea. Kittens may also have digestive upset as they adjust to solid food. Mention recent changes in meals, treats, or any human food to the veterinary team. Cornell Feline Health Center describes both diet changes and the transition to solid food as possible factors.
Stress
A stressful event can trigger a brief episode, but stress is only one possibility. It does not rule out parasites or other illness, so monitor your kitten’s energy, appetite, and other symptoms rather than assuming stress is the cause. Cornell’s feline diarrhea guidance includes stress among possible triggers.

Intestinal parasites
Parasites are common in cats, and roundworms are more prevalent in kittens. Coccidia can cause significant disease in kittens. Signs may be nonspecific, so a fecal test and veterinary guidance are more useful than trying to identify a parasite by looking at the stool. See Cornell’s overview of gastrointestinal parasites in cats.
Infection and other illness
Feline panleukopenia is a highly contagious, often fatal disease that most commonly and severely affects kittens. Signs can include depression, poor appetite, fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and severe dehydration. A sick kitten’s diarrhea should not be dismissed as a food issue. Diarrhea can also have other digestive or systemic causes, particularly when it persists or returns. Merck Veterinary Manual’s panleukopenia guidance describes the disease and its signs.

When to contact a veterinarian
Call or seek veterinary care promptly if your kitten is lethargic, refuses food, vomits, or has blood in the diarrhea. These warning signs matter more than waiting for a particular number of hours or days. Diarrhea, especially with vomiting, can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.
If your kitten is lively and eating normally, contact the veterinary team for advice and ask whether to bring a fresh stool sample for testing. VCA recommends veterinary attention right away for the warning signs above and advises contacting the veterinarian if diarrhea lasts more than two days or does not improve. Cornell advises care as soon as possible when diarrhea lasts longer than a day or two and is accompanied by poor appetite, lethargy, or vomiting. Do not wait for a time threshold if your kitten seems unwell. VCA’s kitten diarrhea guidance explains when to seek care.

What to tell the veterinarian and bring
- When the diarrhea began, how often it occurs, and whether it is getting worse.
- Any changes to food, treats, feeding routine, or access to human food.
- Recent stress, contact with other animals, and vaccination and deworming history.
- Whether your kitten has vomited or has changes in appetite or energy.
- A fairly fresh stool sample, if your kitten is otherwise lively and eating; ask the clinic how to collect and bring it.
The veterinarian will use your kitten’s history and examination to decide whether a fecal test or other diagnostics are appropriate. A stool test may help identify parasites; additional tests depend on the signs and suspected cause. Ask whether your kitten needs an examination, testing, or a temporary diet.

Keep fresh water available and call the veterinary team for advice tailored to your kitten. Ask before changing food: a veterinarian may recommend a balanced veterinary diet intended for short-term diarrhea management, or a supplement, depending on the case. Follow the team’s instructions, including how and when to return to regular food as stools normalize.

Do not assume chicken and rice or adult cat food is suitable for a growing kitten. Do not give human medicines or supplements unless a veterinarian directs you to do so; some over-the-counter medicines can harm cats, and human products are not necessarily appropriate for pets.
How diarrhea is treated
Treatment depends on the cause. A veterinarian may prescribe parasite medication when indicated, recommend additional tests, or provide supportive care based on the examination and results. Do not choose a dewormer, anti-diarrheal medicine, or dose on your own.
