Soha Ali Khan’s World Animal Day story is less a “pet collection” than a lifetime of animal encounters. Only one dog, Oreo, is named as her current pet. In an interview with Natasha Coutinho for Hindustan Times, published on October 4, 2026, she traces the thread from a mouse in her childhood bedroom to farm animals, family dogs, elephants in South Africa and the dog she lives with now.

The animals in Soha’s story, and which ones were pets

The interview mixes household dogs with wild and farm animals. Only some of them were pets, so the table keeps them apart.

Animal Connection Pet?
Oreo Soha’s current dog, named in the interview Yes, current
Masti Kunal Kemmu’s dog; his death was hard on the family Yes, past
Childhood family dogs Soha says the family always had dogs while she was growing up Yes, past
A mouse in her bedroom She calls it her first connection with an animal No
Farm animals, lizards and mice Childhood in Bhopal and Pataudi; lizards and mice at the family home in Delhi No
Elephants Watched in South Africa No, wildlife sighting

Where it began: a mouse and a lot of distance

Soha says she spent much of her childhood in Bhopal and Pataudi around farm animals. She also remembers lizards and mice at the family home in Delhi. In her words: “The first connection I had with an animal was with a little mouse that lived in my bedroom.”

She describes her attitude as curious but respectful: “I was curious but respected that there could be distance between us and animals.” That separates her wildlife encounters, which were about observing, from her dogs, which were about closeness.

A father’s rule: every child needs a pet

Soha recalls her father, Tiger Pataudi, telling her it was important for every child to grow up with a pet. She says the family always had dogs while she was growing up.

Masti and Inaaya’s first lesson about loss

Masti belonged to Kunal Kemmu. Soha says his death was difficult for the family and was the first time their daughter Inaaya came face to face with death and its finality.

Oreo, the current dog

Oreo is the one pet the interview identifies as Soha’s current dog. Nothing in it suggests a larger household menagerie. Soha describes him as sensitive to the mood at home: “Oreo is empathetic, he comes to whoever is feeling low and licks your ear or put his head on you. He’s like a therapy dog.”

That is an affectionate description from his owner. It is not a professional designation or a clinical assessment.

How Inaaya looks after him

  • She tries not to give Oreo too many treats or the family’s food.
  • She reminds visitors that he is not a toy and should be carried carefully.

These are small habits, but they show a child learning that a pet’s wellbeing comes before playtime. Soha does not name any brand or product in connection with them.

Elephants: watching rather than owning

Soha says she is fascinated by elephants. On a trip to South Africa she watched mothers protect their babies and noticed the movements of their ears. This is her own recollection of a wildlife encounter, and the interview does not suggest she keeps or has kept elephants.

Why the story fits World Animal Day

The interview shows two ways of relating to animals. One is a close, daily bond with dogs. The other is distance and respect for wild and farm animals. Both start in childhood habits and the example of a parent who thought every child should grow up with a pet.
