A cat feeling hot when you touch it does not necessarily have a fever: touch cannot reliably tell you a cat’s body temperature. Pay attention to how your cat is acting, whether it has been exposed to heat, and whether it has symptoms such as rapid panting, vomiting, or weakness. If heatstroke may be involved, seek veterinary care immediately.

Why might my cat feel hot?

Your hand can detect that your cat feels warm, but it cannot establish whether the cat has a fever. Warmth by itself is not a diagnosis, and a warm ear, nose, paw, or belly is not a reliable temperature test. VCA Animal Hospitals notes that temperature must be measured and interpreted alongside the animal’s clinical signs.

Heat exposure and illness are different possibilities. If your cat has recently been in a hot environment, watch for signs of heatstroke. If there is no clear heat exposure but your cat seems unwell, a veterinarian can assess whether a fever or another problem is present.

What temperature is normal for a cat?

VCA Animal Hospitals gives a normal body temperature range for dogs and cats of 100.0–102.5°F (37.7–39.2°C). It says a measured temperature above 104°F (40.0°C) or below 99°F (37.2°C) is an emergency. These numbers refer to measured body temperature, not how warm the cat feels to your hand.

A reading should be considered with your cat’s symptoms and veterinary advice. VCA cautions that a cat resisting restraint may register a high reading that does not represent fever. If your cat is distressed or difficult to handle, do not force a temperature check; veterinary staff can take the measurement safely.

Fever or heatstroke: what is the difference?

Fever

A fever occurs when the body’s temperature-regulating system raises its target temperature. Merck Veterinary Manual says infections are the most common cause of fever in cats, but finding the cause may require a veterinary history, physical examination, and laboratory or other tests. Feeling warm cannot reveal the cause.

Heatstroke

Heatstroke is a dangerous rise in body temperature that is not caused by the same regulated set-point change as fever. Merck Veterinary Manual states, “Heat stroke is an emergency.” Signs can include hot skin, vomiting, drooling, rapid panting, distress, uncoordinated movement, collapse, or unconsciousness.

When should I take a hot cat to the vet?

Seek immediate veterinary care if your cat may have been exposed to heat and is panting rapidly, drooling, vomiting, distressed, uncoordinated, collapsing, or unconscious. Do not wait to take its temperature if any of these signs are present. A measured temperature above 104°F (40.0°C) or below 99°F (37.2°C) is also an emergency threshold according to VCA.

What to do if you suspect heatstroke

  1. Move your cat away from the heat. Get it into a cooler environment.
  2. Begin gentle cooling. Merck advises using cool water, wet towels, or ice packs on the head and body, especially over the belly. A fan may help. Do not immerse your cat in cold water.
  3. Offer small amounts of water once its temperature begins to go down. Do not force water.
  4. Go to a veterinarian right away. Cooling at home does not replace urgent veterinary care.
