Bryan Reisberg takes adoptable shelter dogs on outings around New York City, films their adventures and shares the videos to help potential adopters see each dog’s personality. A WABC-TV report published October 6, 2026, says Reisberg had completed more than 55 adoption rides and that the videos had drawn more than half a billion views. Those are figures reported by WABC and Reisberg, not independently measured audience totals.
How the adoption rides work
Reisberg and shelter staff choose dogs who can manage the busy city environment. He takes them out in a backpack, records their time together and posts videos alongside adoption information. The aim is to let people see adoptable dogs behaving and interacting beyond the shelter setting.
The Washington Post described the outings as happening roughly weekly and noted that shelter staff select dogs for whom a crowded-city trip is appropriate. The rides are not a one-size-fits-all activity: the dog’s suitability is part of the decision.
From Maxine’s city outings to shelter dogs
The project grew from Reisberg’s experience carrying his own dog, Maxine, around the city and sharing their outings online. The Washington Post reported that he launched his pet gear business, Little Chonk, in 2021 after people repeatedly asked about the carrier he used. WABC reported that Reisberg decided to build a product because he did not want to recommend a carrier he considered unsafe; that was his assessment, not an independent safety finding.

Later, when Maxine could not join outings, Reisberg began taking shelter dogs instead. Little Chonk makes pet gear and accessories, and the backpack is a central part of the rides. The reporting does not independently test the Little Chonk dog backpack or establish that it is suitable for every dog.
What the adoption and view figures show
Published counts refer to different dates and groups, so they should be read as separate snapshots rather than added together. Reports also describe featured dogs finding homes and broader shelter trends; neither establishes that videos alone caused an overall change in adoption rates.

Participants have described the work’s impact in personal and organizational terms. Reisberg said, “A really direct impact. You make a video, it goes viral, and then somebody wants to adopt the dog.” Moore said, “That collaboration has literally helped us save these dogs’ lives.” Best Friends CEO Julie Castle said, “It reinforces the notion that shelter animals aren’t broken.” These statements reflect the speakers’ views; they do not amount to a controlled assessment of the videos’ effect on overall adoptions.

People who cannot adopt may still be able to give a shelter dog time outside the kennel. Best Friends’ Adventure Buddy page describes its Los Angeles program: volunteers spend time with adoptable dogs, staff match dogs to volunteers’ abilities and home environments, outings may last a few hours or a full day, and the organization supplies needed items. Those are details of the Los Angeles program, not a description of the rules for Reisberg’s New York rides. Ask a local shelter or rescue what volunteer outings are available and what screening, training or scheduling they require.
