Her owner, Cecilia Celis, used a patio cushion to make the bird release the dog. Lulu was taken to a veterinarian with a neck wound, and contemporary reports said she was expected to recover.
What happened to Lulu
ABC News reported that Lulu and the family’s other Yorkie, Heidi, each weighed two pounds. Celis told KVVU, as quoted by UPI, that the hawk swooped in, dragged Lulu and seemed to be choking her as it stood on the dog. The account describes the event; it does not establish the bird’s species or identity.
Celis went outside and struck or pushed at the hawk with a patio-chair cushion until it released Lulu. ABC News quoted her shouting, “Get off my dog, get off my dog!” ABC News’ February 18, 2019 report and Inside Edition’s February 21, 2019 report describe the rescue.
Lulu’s injury and recovery
Reports said Lulu had a wound to her neck and was taken for veterinary care. The family was told she was expected to be okay; the accounts do not provide further details about her treatment or recovery. UPI’s contemporaneous report said the family’s takeaway was to watch the dogs when they were outside.

Why this story is still retold
The striking element is the size difference described in the reporting: ABC News said each Yorkie weighed two pounds, while the hawk was strong enough that Celis used a cushion to make it let go. Inside Edition called it “a life-or-death struggle in a family backyard”; that is the outlet’s description, not a wildlife assessment.
A later iHeartDogs retelling published in 2023 says Celis thought the hawk might be a pet because it lingered. That was her speculation in a later account, not a verified identification of the bird.
