KC’s Trendiest Dog Sounds Made Up, but the Labahoula Is Real

A Labahoula is a Labrador Retriever–Catahoula leopard dog mix. Kansas City’s “fastest-growing” label came with a small-count threshold and doesn’t make the mix a standardized breed.

A Labahoula is a Labrador Retriever–Catahoula leopard dog mix—not a newly established, standardized breed. In an October 5, 2026 report, Axios Kansas City called it the city’s fastest-growing dog trend, citing Rover data. That ranking has an important caveat: Axios says a trend required at least 10 new dogs added in 2026, so “fastest-growing” does not mean common.

What is a Labahoula?

“Labahoula” is a name for a dog with Labrador Retriever and Catahoula leopard dog parentage. It describes a mix; the name alone does not establish a formal breed registry, a standardized appearance, or predictable traits.

Axios Kansas City reported that goldendoodles remained the city’s favorite dog, while Labahoulas ranked as the fastest-growing trend. The distinction is between popularity and growth: the report says Rover counted a trend when at least 10 new dogs were added in 2026. It does not give an absolute Kansas City Labahoula count, and the threshold means a fast-growing category could still be a small group.

What does the Catahoula parent contribute?

The Catahoula leopard dog has working-dog roots. The American Kennel Club describes the breed as a multipurpose working dog with a powerful, well-muscled build, agility, and endurance. The United Kennel Club standard recounts work including hunting, tracking, treeing, and livestock handling.

#1 Best Overall

The UKC standard says Catahoula temperament can range from serious and businesslike while working to clownish at home, with varying energy levels. That description is about Catahoulas, not a guarantee that a Labahoula will have a particular temperament or activity level. The UKC also notes that Catahoulas have varied coat patterns and eye colors; leopard markings or blue eyes are not universal and cannot identify a Labahoula on their own. Louisiana designated the Catahoula its official state dog in 1979, according to the UKC standard.

How much exercise might a Labahoula need?

Axios characterizes the mix as energetic and athletic and recommends plenty of exercise. Treat that as a broad description, not an individual prescription: a dog’s needs depend on its age, health, behavior, and the traits it actually inherited. Plan for regular activity, then adjust based on the dog in front of you rather than relying on its mix name.

For a prospective adopter, useful questions include how the dog behaves around household members and strangers, what activity it enjoys, and whether any health concerns affect its routine. A foster volunteer may be able to provide an informed picture of an individual dog. The AKC Rescue Network says foster volunteers can share a dog’s history, temperament, health concerns, and special needs to help find a suitable home: AKC Rescue Network.

Is a Labahoula a good family dog?

There is no reliable one-size-fits-all answer for this mix. The available parent-breed descriptions do not establish how every Labahoula will act with children, visitors, other pets, or a particular household. Consider the individual dog’s observed behavior and history, the household’s capacity for exercise and training, and any care needs identified by its foster or rescue organization.
