In May 2025, volunteers at Pet Angel Adoption & Rescue in Frankenmuth, Michigan, found a mother cat and her six kittens left outside the shelter. The rescue’s account, told in the kittens’ Petfinder adoption profile, says the family was brought inside and later placed in foster care.
What happened outside Pet Angel
According to Ernie’s Petfinder profile, the family was left outside Pet Angel on the first 80-degree day of May 2025. The mother, later named Sesame, was in a small cage. Her six kittens—about six weeks old, the listing says—were inside a closed plastic storage tote with no air holes.
Volunteers arriving for the evening shift found the cats and brought them inside. The profile recounts: “When the volunteers showed up for the evening shift, they found us, and quickly brought us inside to safety.” The account is written in the cats’ first-person voice; it is not an independently reported eyewitness account.
Sesame and her kittens went into foster care
Pet Angel named the kittens after Sesame Street characters: Ernie, Elmo, Rocco, Grover, Bert, and Snuffy. The Petfinder profile says the family went to foster care, where Sesame nursed and weaned the kittens. They returned to Pet Angel once the kittens could manage without round-the-clock care.

What the rescue’s profile says about their health
The same listing reports that Snuffy became sick in late July 2025 and died. The initial suspicion was pneumonia, but the rescue says later veterinary investigation found enlarged hearts in Sesame and all five surviving kittens. It reports that September 2025 heart ultrasounds showed Ernie had an enlarged heart and tested positive for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). These medical details are attributed to the rescue’s Petfinder account; veterinary records were not independently reviewed.
Ernie’s profile also says he is particularly fond of the rescue’s cat exercise wheel. It does not identify a make or model.

About Pet Angel Adoption & Rescue
Pet Angel says its founders began rehoming kittens after a cat colony appeared near their Frankenmuth home in 2004, and that the rescue moved to its current List Street location in 2005. The organization describes itself as a nonprofit, no-kill, volunteer-based shelter with a mostly free-roam facility. It says its focus since 2023 has been hard-to-place cats, including bonded pairs and shy, scared, or extra-needs cats.
On its About Us page, Pet Angel says it has rehomed approximately 2,000 cats and kittens since opening. That is the organization’s approximate cumulative figure, not an independently audited count. Pet Angel also says cats in its care receive socialization and care and are fixed, vaccinated, and microchipped before going to homes. It depends on donations to operate.
